All of the 55 NYPD cops charged with drunk driving since 1999 pleaded down to non-felony charges and almost every single one of them remained on the force. According to the Post, the family of a 66-year-old Bronx woman fatally struck by an off-duty detective—who was charged with DWI—intends to sue the NYPD and feds for $20 million. The Post reports, "Dusta Juncaj, 66, was struck by off-duty Detective Kevin Spellman as she crossed Kingsbridge Avenue on Oct. 30. Spellman, a veteran detective in a joint NYPD-federal fugitive task force, was driving a Chevrolet leased by the US Marshals Service and had a blood alcohol level of .21 -- more than 2½ times the legal limit -- five hours after the crash, sources said." more ›

Detective Kevin (Spike) Spellman had a blood alcohol level of 0.21 percent—more than twice the legal limit—almost six hours after the accident. The off-duty police detective who fatally struck a pedestrian in the Bronx yesterday morning was charged with vehicular homicide, criminally negligent homicide, and DWI. Detective Kevin Spellman had been driving a Chevrolet into the Bronx intersection of W. 232 Street and Kingsbridge Avenue, hitting 67-year-old Drana Nikac. A witness said, "He had a red light.
