Elettaria: Hendrix shredded here once upon a time, when it was a music venue called The 8th Wonder, but now the stage is an open kitchen and South Asian-spiced American dishes are the stars. Decorated by the man behind Allen & Delancey, the seductive 72-seat interior (pictured) features a rustic reclaimed barn-wood ceiling, plush banquettes, old-world paintings and exposed brick walls. Appetizers include a dish of dayboat sea scallops with celery root puree, oxtail, Meyer lemon and cilantro leaves, while entrées like roasted chicken with sweet and sour tomato ravioli and smoked sunchokes sound irresistible. Behind the 14-seat steel bar, Death & Co. alums concoct their fancy cocktails. 33 West Eighth Street, (212) 677-3833.

Author, critic and journalist Steven Heller started out as someone who, in the words of Paula Scher, "had been more or less oblivious to design," but went on not only to launch the careers of some of our most well-known illustrators, but also to chronicle graphic design in more than 100 books. Heller also has been a contributing editor to Print, Eye, Baseline and I.D., writes obituaries for The New York Times and a column for the Book Review. A Times art director for 33 years, 30 of which he spent at the Book Review, Heller, a New York City native, is the co-founder and co-chair of the MFA Designer as Author program at the School of Visual Arts (he has lectured at SVA for 14 years). Today, a retrospective of Mr. Heller’s work opens at the School of Visual Art’s Visual Arts Museum.
If you've ever wondered how some big-name lawyers get attached to high-profile defendants without money, check out the NY Times article about lawyers jockeying to defend Darryl Littlejohn. Littlejohn, the bouncer of former SoHo bar and restaurant The Fall, is accused of murdering John Jay graduate student Imette St. Guillen, whose body was found late February off the Belt Parkway in Brooklyn, bound and wrapped in a blanket.
The Brooklyn grand jury is still hearing evidence for the Imette St. Guillen murder, with prosecutors looking for an indictment against Darryl Littlejohn, a bouncer at the Falls, which is the last place St. Guillen was seen. The Post says that the DNA evidence that links Littlejohn to ties found around St. Guillen's hands will be presented today. Gothamist found it interesting that the Post described that evidence as cracking the case "wide open," since most of the other evidence is circumstantial. Littlejohn's lawyer, Kevin O'Donnell, has been very vocal about how he does not think his client will get a fair trial - as well as how the police evidence is not very strong.
As anyone knows from reading Kitchen Confidential, teasing and macho posturing are part of the kitchen life and people need to be tough (like the lone female chef in the kitchen, being harassed by a guy, who then turned around and grabbed the guy's balls). But this - this sounds insane. Can anyone people who have worked in restaurants (and their kitchens) tell us about what goes on?
