Last Night's Action: Role Reversal
Rangers 4, Islanders 2: It's a good thing these teams play each other eight times each season. Otherwise, the Rangers might have a confidence problem. Given enough opportunities to beat a particular opponent, any team is bound to cash in sooner or later. After losing the first three games against the Islanders, the Blueshirts finally broke through. Jaromir Jagr and Chris Drury each had a goal and an assist against Rick DiPietro. The Islanders still...
Elsewhere in the ist-a-verse
We at the Gothamist network would like to express our heartfelt wishes to the people of Minnesota in the days after their tragic bridge collapse. We're not trying to discount the severity of the accident by making note of it in opposition to our usual -Ist lightheartedness - we just wanted to take a moment and recognize those affected last week.
Last Night's Action: Nets Want Moore Games Like This
Even Zebras Hate the Knicks
The Knicks have enough problems without having the referees turn against them, but that’s apparently what happened during the final minute of their 98-94 loss to the Timberwolves. Larry Brown screamed for a foul when Jackie Butler lost the ball, but was told, “it doesn’t matter” by one of the refs.
Knicks Lose Again
Maybe this has escaped the notice of the Knicks’ management, but their team cannot play defense. Gilbert Arenas took advantage of New York’s defensive ineptitude last night, scoring 46 points in just three quarters of the Wizards 110-89 victory. To make matters worse, Stephon Marbury reinjured his shoulder during the first half and missed the rest of the game.
Back to Earth
And just like that the winning streak is over. The Knicks didn’t just lose on Sunday they were humiliated. Atrocious defense, poor rebounding and lousy free throw shooting all played a part in Toronto’s 129-103 victory.
He Isn't Listening
Let’s face it, we all expected great things when Stephon Marbury joined the Knicks. The local boy was coming home and perhaps that is why we were blinded to his faults. We forgot how he demanded out of Minnesota even with Kevin Garnett to pass to. We ignored the fact that Jason Kidd took his place on the Nets and instantly made them title contenders. There were a lot of warning signs we simply missed.
Team USA Already In Turmoil
More and more the USA Basketball committee that is selecting the 12 players for this summers Olympic basketball squad are hearing "Im out", especially since the recent bombings in Athens. All this makes Gothamist wonder, who's in? Players that have turned down bids to play for Team USA include Seattles Ray Allen (fianc giving birth this summer), Jerseys Jason Kidd (nagging injuries), Torontos Vince Carter (getting married this summer), Minnesoatas Kevin Garnett (fatigue from prolonged playoff run), and a trio of Lakers which include Karl Malone (needs time to recover from injury filled season), Kobe Bryant (pesky pending rape trial) and Shaquile ONeal (doesnt really want to go). Although he has not declined his invite yet, sources say Indianas Jermaine ONeal is considering pulling out because of safety concerns in Athens.
Coney Island's Lincoln High School, Led by Telfair, Win Again
Telfair is already a star (check out the gallery Newsday devotes to him), with Jay-Z, Foxy Brown, Spike Lee , and 12,018 other people in attendance at The Garden. Gothamist wonders if Telfair will be the next Kevin Garnett or the next Leon Smith.
