34 Year Sentence For Man Who Went On 2006 Stabbing Spree

Kenny Alexis, who was convicted attempted murder after stabbing four people in a 13-hour period in 2006, was sentenced to 34 years in prison yesterday. Prosecutors had asked for 75 years, but his defense asked the judge to consider Alexis's medical history—Alexis is schizophrenic and had spent time in a mental facility. Alexis first stabbed a tourist from Texas on a downtown C train; then he stabbed a man at the Rockefeller Plaza subway platform. His final two victims were Canadian tourists sitting on a traffic island in Times Square. More Victims Face Schizophrenic Stabbing Spree Suspect

Two more tourists who were victims of a 2006 stabbing rampage in Midtown testified against Kenny Alexis, a schizophrenic homeless man accused in the attacks. The two Canadian women in their twenties recounted the 3 a.m. morning when they headed to McDonald's for a late night snack. Through a French translator, Melanie Carrier told the court, "I put my hand to my back, and I had blood on my hand...I looked at Audrey, and she had blood. I remembered I had a lot of blood." The Post describes how "the knife had sliced into her spine, cutting through both the sheath and the membrane that protect the precious spinal cord." On Friday the jury heard from Christopher McCarthy, who had been stabbed in the heart by Alexis while on the subway. Yesterday in State Supreme Court in Manhattan, the trial began in the case of Kenny Alexis, a homeless man who was arrested in 2006 after stabbing three tourists, one of whom he knifed in the heart while riding the downtown C train. The victim, 24-year-old Christopher McCarthy told the jury, "Your body isn't ready for it. You prick your finger, you cut your hand slicing a bagel—this was 1,000 times worse. Maybe more." Alexis is trying to get off on an insanity defense, claiming he is a paranoid schizophrenic. In opening statements, assistant DA Christopher Ryan said, “Even people who are deeply, deeply mentally ill know the difference between right and wrong. The Beantown connection in Tuesday's and Wednesday's stabbing spree: A Boston judge allowed Kenny Alexis to be released of his own recognizance thought prosecutors wanted him held on $300 bail. From the NY Times:

The charges against Mr. Alexis in both of the Massachusetts cases were less severe than those he faces in New York. Stabbing Spree Suspect Arrested

Yesterday morning, police arrested a homeless man for three separate stabbing incidents on Tuesday afternoon and early Wednesday morning. Four cabbies who witnessed Kenny Alexis stab two women near the Times Square W Hotel called 911 and followed him until police apprehended him at a McDonald's. Alexis's brushes with the law started before the first stabbing on a downtown C train - he was stopped by the police are trying to enter the 42nd Street and 8th Avenue subway without paying, but since he didn't have a record, the police just issued him a summons.
