In what is becoming a slightly disturbing trend, the United States lost again in the World Baseball Classic. First, they lost to Canada, yesterday, the Americans lost to South Korea, 7-3. South Korea, who is 2-0 in the 2nd round and is unbeaten in the WBC, slugged their way to victory. Hee-Seop Choi teed off for a three-run homer in the 4th inning off of Astros pitcher Dan Wheeler, giving the Koreans a 6-1 lead. South Korea added another run in the 6th and the United States mounted a feeble attempt at a comeback in the 9th.

It’s a good thing they put the mercy rule into the WBC because if they hadn’t, the U.S. would probably still be hitting. Fired up from their defeat at the hands of Canada, the U.S. squad demolished South Africa 17-0 in a game that was shortened to five innings. Ken Griffey exploded for two homers and seven RBI’s while Roger Clemens gave up 1 hit while striking out six over 4 1/3 innings.
The ball hit the side of Cameron's glove, three runs scored on the play, and the Mets went on to lose, 6-2 (box score). Cameron also went 0-4 with 3 strikeouts for the game and was booed by the Shea Stadium crowd of 23,827. After the game, he understood the treatment by the fans, "That just kind of tells you what they expect of you. I've got no problem with it. I botched a play out there - by far one of the toughest plays you have to deal with out there."
Every time the Mets get to one game over .500, the Mets fail to get to two games above .500. Last night was no different. The Mets are 0-5 this season when they have a chance to go 2 games above .500. Last night's chance was blown in the 12th inning when Sean Casey hit a two-run home run off of John Franco that resulted in a 6-4 loss (box score).
The win Sunday, their 6th in 7 games, returned the Mets to .500, a mark they have struggled to maintain. Staying at .500 might be a challenge for the Mets (no matter how good the lineup and the pitching are) as they will play several teams that are in contention for the next month - the Reds, Yankees (who they were 0-6 against last year), Phillies, and Marlins.
