Last night, the family and friends of Sean Bell were joined by hundreds for Bell's funeral in Queens. Bell was killed during a chaotic confrontation with police officers last weekend. The Reverend Al Sharpton spoke during the service. From the Daily News:

"We must give Sean a legacy, a legacy of justice, a legacy of fairness, not a legacy against police. We don't hate cops. We don't hate race. We hate wrong. We dislike wickedness in high places."

Gothamist Arts & Events' Jen Carlson and Janelle Gunther headed to the Siren Music Festival and have some choice pictures from the hot Coney Island days of music (that's David Cross in the crowd, above). The NY Times' Kelefa Sanneh thinks concert goers were fortified/stupefied "by a potential toxic mixture of sun, beer and fried clams" (Gothamist loves the accompanying photograph by Rahav Segev which shows the Cyclone, fans, and Death Cab for Cutie). Carlson and Gunther, great pictures, but you left the fried clams out - what gives?

And Chris Rock was brilliant at last year's MTV Video Music Awards.

Gothamist guesses we need to report this bit of Lower East Side news, as Lockhart Steele is on vacation. As part of MTV's week of celebrating the MTV Video Music Awards, there's a $8.28 dinner entree promotion through tomorrow night at Lower East Side restaurants, including Essex, Punch & Judy, and AKA Cafe, are participating. Kelefa Sanneh gives a backhandedly sorta positive review of this year's Siren Festival and basically says that it wasn't that adventurous but it was rather comforting with all these younger bands aping styles of the Rolling Stones, Liquid Liquid, and New Wave bands. He also notes that the Coney Island venue that offered daylight was something new for the bands and their fans: "dazed-looking hipsters, blinking in the sunlight." Among the performers Sanneh mentions: Idlewild; The Kills; Datsuns, !!!, "scene-stealing" plus a song called "Me & Giuliani Down by the Schoolyard (A True Story)"; Hot Hot Heat; Northern State; Ted Leo, who appeared at Tinkle on Sunday; and Jen's favorite, Modest Mouse, whose uneven act was challenging.

Bjork's new look: Do we attribute it to her usual lovable nuttiness or can we say it's Matthew Barney? A close-up black and white shot of Bjork's new bowl cut, which Kelefa Sanneh called "fetching."
