You may remember Keith Kin Yan from his photography work at Overshadowed.com, but recently he's been studying digital animation and effects at NYU. His recent work has grown more painterly, and for the last week, he's been blowing us away with these NYC street scenes. Check them out. [Related: an interesting "visual interview" with Keith. Another collection of processed pix. Keith also has a collection at Flickr.]
Overshadowed New York City
Final Days of the Auto Show
Sure, gas prices are outrageously expensive right now, but it's the last weekend of the New York International Auto Show. Besides, once you maxed out all your credit lines to buy some of the cars on display, you wouldn't be able to buy gas anyway. Keith's got an awesome set of photos on Flickr from his trip to the auto show, which is essentially car porn. There are lots more photos under the 'nyautoshow' tag as well.
Drawing Center May Roost at the South Street Seaport
It looks like the Drawing Center will actually get an extreme downtown space. The Drawing Center is in talks to build a space where the Fulton Fish Market once was. The deal, as reported by the NY Times, is "far from a done deal," but Gothamist supposes being on the other side of the lower tip of Manhattan is far enough from the World Trader Center not to "denigrate" it. The South Street space would be twice the size of the Drawing Center's current Wooster Street gallery, but about two-thirds the size of the original, World Trade Center site design. Downtown officials are pleased with the match, and so are we - sometimes it feels too commercial (shock!) at the Seaport - this will be a good injection of culture. We just suggest that the first exhibit planned there be drawings of the fish trade over time!
NYC Photobloggers 4, This Friday
Looking for something to do this Friday? Well, why not start off the night with some photoblogs! Friday evening at 7 is the 4th installment of the ever popular New York City Photobloggers talk at the Apple Store. The evening's speakers are Jenene Chesbrough, Raul Gutierrez, Nontajit "Go" Lertworachon, Jay Parkinson (aka Gothamist Health), Travis Ruse, Eliot Shepard, and Keith Kin Yan.
Cold Weather Causes Records Electricity Demand
In a bit of PR for Con Ed, the Post reports that the cold weather we've been having this week has meant higher than ever electricity demand during the winter months. On Monday, the electricity use peaked at 8,962 watts; to put this into perspective, about 12,000 watts is demanded on a hot summer night. So, in this instance, Con Ed was able to say they were able to meet demand, but this has spurred our overactive imagination: Will we be expecting brownouts in the winter? Should we have makeshift bonfires when our space heaters go out? Will it be like The Day After Tomorrow? You may scoff now, but if a tree falls and then people in Ohio and NY are asleep at the wheel again, it might be August 14, 2003 all over again, but with more clothes and more frostbite, which means less sexy.
