A recent series of essays about New York that we enjoyed is Colson Whitehead's The Colossus of New York. What are some books about New York that you like?
To get to the 20th floor of 230 Fifth Avenue you need to walk past security, through turnstiles ready for keycards, past all the stores on the ground floor to a nearly private elevator and the cheetah in the foyer will let you know you’ve made it. And by “made it” we mean “are ready to spend $12 for a well cocktail” or $9 for a beer in a very, very narrow glass. The vitriol you are feeling may be because you’re still in the building — our gimlet didn’t get any cheaper up one flight to the roof but it did taste better with the best view of the area we’ve seen.
- Paris Commune, the West Village eatery that moved into new space at 99 Bank Street last year, is celebrating its anniversary by opening the Rouge Wine Bar. Quaff wines from France, New Zealand, Australia, South Africa, and Chile while you wait for a table upstairs, or finish off your night by sipping on a glass of cognac while you gaze at the original fresco covering two walls. Look closely and you might see Marc Jacobs, Karl Lagerfeld, and a certain editor of Vogue among the romantic couples, sulky gamines, and Paris Commune regulars worked into the mural. Proving that the weight he loss was not in the "I'm an eccentric fashion designer" area, Chanel and Fendi designer Karl Lagerfeld's ridiculous 12 iPod carrying case reminds Gothamist that sometimes technology is dangerous. Lagerfeld is an iPod addict, with 40 iPods, and wanted a way to celebrate them. Hmm, 40 iPods seems a little self-defeating to us though. If this doesn't help start some sort of anti-iPod backlash, Gothamist doesn't know what would. Engadget says the $1,500 case "actually looks like a terrible way to transport any gadget" while the TMFML cries for the fate of humanity. Gothamist will wait for Apple's brand managers to figure out if this is good or bad news for them.
J.Lo, Charlize, Scarlett, Julianne, Sofia...Mandy - they were all there last night. Check out some photos from Yahoo! News and Wireimage.
