Video: Obama Puts On His Populist Hat For Kansas Speech

President Obama got all populist in Kansas yesterday, in a speech designed to hark back to Teddy Roosevelt (who gave his New Nationalism Speech there in 1910). "This isn’t about class warfare," he said while trying to explain in Occupy-friendly language how his views differ economically from the Republican party. "This is about the nation’s welfare." more ›

Cop: Brooklyn Drug Smuggler Smelled Too Fresh

When driving with drugs, don't overdo it with the air fresheners! That seems to be the moral of the story of ex-Sanitation worker John Mignano, who was caught allegedly transporting 8.8 pounds of cocaine, 50 pounds of marijuana, and nearly $21,000 in cash at a traffic stop in Kansas. Mignano would have gotten away with it too if it weren't for his penchent for air fresheners, the Kansas Highway Patrol Trooper who busted him recently recounted in Brooklyn federal court. more ›

Way to go, algorithms! more ›

Good Luck With Your Office NCAA Basketball Pool

Yesterday, the dreams of the Kansas Jayhawks as well as anyone who picked the team to go all the way in their brackets (we're looking at you President Obama) burst as the top-seeded team was upset by Northern Iowa. The No. 9 seed eked out the 69-67 win with Ali Farokhmanesh's three-pointer; Mike Lupica called the upset "one of the biggest and best we've had in a long time." Yesterday also marked No. 2 Villanova's exit from the South Region, thanks to No. 10 St. Mary's. With suggestions that the Big East is overrated, Syracuse coach Jim Boheim said, "Everybody has difficulty in this tournament. It's hard to measure a team or a league by what happens in the NCAA." His team, a No. 1 seed, beat Vermont yesterday. more ›

Bigoted, Anti-Semitic Protesters Help Raise $10K for Synagogue

A small but well-publicized group of homophobic, anti-Semitic Baptist zealots from Kansas brought their dumb message of hate to Manhattan this weekend, standing around with inflammatory signs like "The Jews Killed Jesus" outside a West Village synagogue that caters to gays and lesbians. But instead of straightening out the gays and bringing the Jews to Jesus, these hateful hayseeds actually succeeded in helping out one of their targets, the Congregation Beth Simchat Torah, which turned the demonstration into a fundraiser! more ›
