An MTA track worker scared off a man who was raping a 36-year-old woman on the tracks at the Bowery J subway station at Delancey Street on Wednesday. Police say the suspect targeted the woman who got off a train around 1 a.m.: The [victim] was on an escalator when 29-year-old Michael Torres grabbed her around the neck, covered her mouth and told her not to scream. He then dragged her to the end of the platform, threw her on the tracks and sexually assaulted her."

Video: J Train Is A Perfect Place To Get Your Head Shaved
The subway's a great way to get things done, whether its clipping your nails, licking your shoes, or eating noodles. So why not use that precious time to have your lady friend give you a buzz cut? After all, if you wait until you reach your destination, there's just going to be more hair to shave. You don't want to wind up looking like some dirty hippie when you get off the train at Jamaica Center, so nip that new growth in the bud and break out the hair trimmers, like this productive couple!
Video: Extreme Subway Rider Clings To Outside Of Moving Train
Riding on the inside of the subway car is for sheep—that's where the Man wants to trap you, locked up tight with all the rats and the douchery. Real rebels roll on the OUTSIDE of the subway car, clinging to the outside of the doors, breathing that fresh outside air, wearing their jeans inside out, listening to Malcolm Gladwell's Outliers on mp3. Check out this subway surfing star as he hangs onto the outside of the J train like a pro (or as the person who uploaded the video puts it, an "idiot"):
Man Survives Drunken Stumble Into Subway Tracks
How do you know you've had a wild and crazy Saturday night? Well, for one Brooklyn man, apparently it's when firefighters are removing your from subway tracks—after a train goes over you. The Post reports that Arshad Kahn, 25, "had been partying at a nightclub before stumbling onto Brooklyn-bound tracks at the 121st Street station in Jamaica at about 6 a.m." Kahn said, "I don't remember what happened. I was on the platform. The next thing I remember was the Fire Department pulling me out. How did I survive? I don't even know."
MTA Mulls Longer Waits For 40 Bus Lines
Just as the M15's select bus service had us believing that the MTA and its budget finally had quality service at heart, the Post reports that a committee is voting on cutting service on 40 bus lines. In the proposal [pdf], 40 of 64 bus schedule changes would "represent reductions in service levels to more closely align service with customer demand," which would ideally save the agency $300,000 a year. The MTA says the silver lining is that the less-frequent buses would arrive on time more often. They'll accept your thanks any time now.
Something Besides Snow Stops Trains Temporarily
As if the trains didn't have enough trouble, last night an idiot went and decided it would be a fun idea to walk on the train tracks on the Williamsburg Bridge. The track-walker started trekking down the tracks around 12:25 a.m. bringing the J train to a halt. He was soon nabbed by cops and service resumed a little after one a.m.. Why the man chose to walk on the tracks when the trains were finally running again, we have no idea. Perhaps that is why he has been taken to Woodhull Hospital for psychiatric observation?
Man Killed On J Train Platform In Queens
Police are investigating the fatal stabbing of a man on the 85th Street-Forest Parkway subway J train platform. It's believed that Dario Paiva, 27, was stabbed after an argument around 11:30 p.m., while his family says he was trying to rescue his brother who was being attacked.
J Train Tracks Get Makeover In Queens
The Jamaica Avenue J is about to get a makeover that will hopefully make residents of Woodhaven and Richmond Hill, Queens slightly less bummed out when they're walking to the subway. MTA officials told City Councilwoman Elizabeth Crowley this week that that part of the span will be repaired and painted forest green next year, according to the Daily News. Currently the underside of the tracks are covered in chipped paint, dirt and grease—decades worth of it, at that.
Track Fire Traps J Train in Queens
Hundreds of riders had to be rescued from a J train near the Sutphin Boulevard station when a track fire stranded the train. A mechanical failure reportedly sparked two small fires, forcing many passengers to climb out of the car and walk along the tracks to the above ground 121st Street station before firefighters arrived. So which is worse, putting yourself in danger walking along the tracks, or waiting hours in a subway on a humid day for firefighters to pry you out?
Transit Cuts, Fare Hike Are as Severe as Expected
After much speculation and the local papers preparing commuters for what was to come, the MTA made their official budget proposal today and as expected, the cutbacks were dramatic. In addition to the slashing of the W and the Z lines among other cuts listed Tuesday, today's 2009 budget also included the following:
Riders May Lose W Train Among Big MTA Cuts
With the MTA's budget deficit now being projected at 1.2 billion (after an original prognosis of 900 million), the Daily News has learned that a report to be released Thursday will include what some are calling "Doomsday" cuts. The big one for many commuters is the elimination of the W line.
