Carnivorous food writer Josh "Mr. Cutlets" Ozersky is once again inviting the entire city to his birthday party, the appropriately-named Meatopia. The date has been set for July 23rd, but what's more interesting is that he's switching the venue this year, from Governor's Island to a brand-new section of Brooklyn Bridge Park. Why the move?

Upscale Restaurants Closing After Tough Summer
Over the weekend it was reported that Cafe des Artistes, the serenely romantic restaurant near Lincoln Center, has closed after more than 90 years in business. The wife of owner George Lang blames the closure on the restaurant's unionized workers, who recently sued the restaurant for unpaid benefits, including medical insurance. Local 100 union president Bill Granfield tells the Times, "We think Mr. Lang is a great figure in the restaurant industry, a great person, and it’s a great restaurant. But it feels like time passed it by a while ago."
New Restaurants Keep it in the Family
Acclaimed chef Michael Psilakis told the New York Times yesterday that he and restaurateur Donatella Arpaia will soon convert the original Kefi into a “comfort food” spot called Gus & Gabriel’s. The restaurant’s name derives from Psilakis’ late father Gus and his three-year-old son Gabriel. Psilakis also told Josh Ozersky that “the logo will be that of an adult and a child; obviously that’s my father, Gus, and my son, Gabriel, but it also a symbolic representation of the individual inner child and their appetite for the reassuring and familiar tastes, especially in hard times.” If one also counts the logo for chef Emma Hearst’s 2-month-old restaurant Sorella (translation: sisters)—which depicts two wine-quaffing, sleepy-eyed ladies, then we have a recession special, mini-trendlet on our hands: restaurants named after family members, with logos depicting family. Too bad the just-opened Grandaisy Tribeca uses its regular, floral emblem instead of a stern-looking senior holding a rolling pin.
Chefs Cook For Book Launch Benefitting Citymeals-on-Wheels
Last night at the somewhat not completed luxury condo project 15 Union Square West (guests rode a construction elevator up to the entrance), chefs Daniel Boulud and Marco Moreira hosted a book party for Dining in New York City, a new, compact hardcover guide to the city’s restaurants by Dutch photographer Jan Bartelsman. Proceeds from the evening benefitted Citymeals-on-Wheels. Fifteen local restaurants—plus the 3 Michelin starred De Librije (Netherlands)—were on hand, offering small plate cityscapes of their best dishes. As the night progressed, chef Daniel Boulud appeared smiling, apparently happy with the four star re-review of Daniel published yesterday in the Times. Elsewhere, food writer Josh Ozersky—who announced to the world yesterday he has gout—showed up wearing a foot brace, albeit triumphantly.
Eric Ripert, Chef
In 1994, Eric Ripert became the executive chef of Le Bernardin after chef-owner Gilbert Le Coze died of a sudden heart attack. The following year, Ripert was only 29 years old when the restaurant was re-reviewed and kept its four-star rating from the New York Times. Le Bernardin has had a total of four four-star New York Times reviews since its New York opening in 1986, and has consistently been awarded a top rating of three Michelin stars since guide inspectors first set up shop here in 2005.
Borough Burger Battle Held, Winner Declared
There was a smorgasbord of inter-borough hamburger love last night at the chandelier-bedazzled Astoria World Manor in Queens for the inaugural Burger Battle of the Boroughs. Representing good taste in general at event sponsor Pat LaFrieda Meats's table, Seymour Burton chef de cuisine (and non-competitor) Josh Shuffman cooked the restaurant’s signature burger for spectators while the event was judged.
Ozersky And Co. Survive Meatopia IV
Despite Meatopia IV's downright pagan theme, Slaughter of the Innocents, which involved spit roasted kid goat and suckling pig as well as the consumption of copious amounts of other young animal flesh, the good lord chose to spare the soul of Mr. Cutlets, aka Josh Ozersky, and the band of meat-crazed revelers that came out Tuesday night to Water Taxi Beach to celebrate Josh's 40th birthday.
