It might have been more than a little symbolic last week when the huge, pink-frosted gyroscopic cupcake towering over 23rd Street restaurant Burgers and Cupcakes came to the end of its last full spin. Meant to be a proud beacon of sugar, the giant baked good was instead an embattled neighborhood fixture from the start; many were happy to see it go. And it’s gone: writer James Wagner shares one rumor relating the cupcake’s possible fate: that an anonymous buyer took the thing off the owners’ hands for $400.

The food festivals were out in full force this weekend, from the 12th Annual Taste of Tribeca, to the behemoth Ninth Avenue International Food Festival, to newcomers BLT Crab Fest (more on that later) and the NYC Culinary Festival. It was a hectic weekend, so the jury was still out on visiting the NYC Culinary festival, at least, that is, until we got an email from the gentleman behind the Big Apple Dining Guide with the ominous subject heading "Don't go to the NY Culinary Festival this weekend." Intrigued, we read on.
April 13: Alpine Cheese & Wine Tasting
The James Beard Foundation will be honoring Chef Michael Romano of Union Square Cafe for his contributions to the food industry at its annual Chefs & Champagne Benefit at the Wölffer Estate Vineyard in Sagaponack, New York. Hang in the Hamptons and enjoy tastings by chefs including Florian Bellanger of Fauchon, Rebecca Charles of Pearl Oyster Bar, Josh DeChellis of Sumile, and Kerry Heffernan of Eleven Madison Park along with Champagne Charles Heidsieck and the Estate's own award-winning wines. Proceeds from the event will benefit the preservation of the historic James Beard House in Greenwich Village, as well as the new East End Long Island Culinary Scholarship and the programs of Spoons Across America: The Source for Children's Culinary Education.
