Last Night's Action: Those Pesky Rivals

Last Night's Action: Those Pesky Rivals

  • Red Bulls 2, Fire 2: Juan Pablo Angel scored in the 69th minute. Gonzalo Segares scored in the 70th minute. How's that for a momentum-killer? At least the teams get a lesson in sharing -- the points, that is.

The Rocket Returns for $28 Million

The Rocket Returns for $28 Million

With the news that Roger Clemens is returning to the Yankees, reactions from the local media and Yankee fans are generally positive. Clemens made the announcement during the 7th inning of yesterday's 5-0 win over the Seattle Mariners. After the singing of "Take Me Out to the Ballgame," Bob Sheppard directed the crowd to the owner's box for a special announcement. Only then did the public find out that Clemens would be returning to pitch for the Yankees, "Well, they came and got me out of Texas. I can tell you, it's a privilege to be back. I'll be talking to y'all soon." more ›

Last Night's Action: Yanks Swept in Boston

  • Devils 3, Lightning 2: Martin Brodeur may have stepped up his play, but the improvement of the Devils' defense made the biggest difference. Brodeur went eight minutes at one point without having to make a save. On offense, Brian Gionta had two goals, and Patrick Elias had an assist on all three scores. New Jersey's win mean it draws Ottawa next, and the Rangers will face the Sabres.

Last Night's Action: Mets Pay Tribute to '86; Yanks Try to Pay Tribute to '78

Last Night's Action: Mets Pay Tribute to '86; Yanks Try to Pay Tribute to '78

-Mets 7, Rockies 4: After honoring the 1986 championship team, the Mets relied on Lastings Milledge and other young players to win their second straight over the Rockies. The best parts of Saturday's game were Milledge's comments that he lived the '86 championship "through highlights and stuff" and the Mets' throwback uniforms. Things were simpler when the Mets wore only blue hats and had only two jerseys -- one home, one away. Do they really need the black jerseys? more ›

Last Night’s Action: Yanks Bomb Boston/Soler Gets First Win

Last Night’s Action: Yanks Bomb Boston/Soler Gets First Win

-Mets 4 Dodgers 1: Alay Soler pitched seven innings of one run ball to get his first career victory after three starts. Jose Reyes started the game off with a home run and Carlos Delgado added his own two-run homer. It's nice to see the Mets game decided by more than one run. more ›

Round One to the Red Sox

Round One to the Red Sox

The Yankees acquired Mike Myers to get out lefty batters. He has made a career of doing that and through twenty-three games had not allowed a run this season. Unfortunately, he had not faced the best lefty in the American League and when he did, David Ortiz hit a three-run homer to propel Boston to a 7-3 victory. more ›

    Mets Delgot-it

    Mets Delgot-it

It looks like the quest for a big bat in the middle of the lineup is coming close to for the Mets. Newsday is reporting that the Mets and Marlins have agreed to a trade for Carlos Delgado. The Mets would ship minor-league pitching prospect Yusmeiro Petit and 1st baseman Mike Jacobs for Delgado and $7 million to help cover the remaining $48 million over 3 years. The players involved in the deal still need to pass physicals and Bud Selig also needs to approve it. more ›

Heilman Turns the Tables on Beckett

Heilman Turns the Tables on Beckett

Heilman, who was the 18th pick in the 2001 draft for the Mets and has had limited success in the Majors, is 3-11 with a 6.50 ERA in his 19 starts prior to last night. If it weren't for an injury to Kris Benson, Heilman might not have even been with the team. Even Gothamist has been down on Heilman (as recently as yesterday), but we'll gladly eat our words if he pitches like this. more ›

    Mets Break out the Brooms

    Mets Break out the Brooms

Victor Zambrano stuggled at times, loading the bases twice, yet only allowed one run in the situations. Mike Piazza, never known for his ability to throw runners out, bounced a ball off the pitcher's mound into the outfield. Yikes. Fortunately for the Mets, John Franco was no better. Franco, who has quickly become the whipping boy for this series, allowed one run and one hit in only 1/3 of an inning. He picked up the blown save, the loss, and had a little tripping incident. more ›

    Mets Improve, But Still Lose

    Mets Improve, But Still Lose

A statistic that is uglier than their losing streak, the Mets have not had a lead in 58 innings - more than six games. The 11 game losing streak is the worst for the Mets since 2002 when they lost 12 straight. The Marlins look to hand the Mets their 12th consecutive loss tomorrow when Kris Benson finally makes another start. more ›
