Lieberman's Wife Targeted By Angry Health Care Bill Supporters

The wife of Senator Joe Lieberman—whom the Times dubs a "master infuriator" for his recent threat to join a Republican filibuster unless Democrats drop a plan to let uninsured Americans under 55 purchase coverage under Medicare—is in the cross hairs. Liberal activists led by the blog Firedoglake are calling upon the Susan B. Komen Foundation to fire Hadassah Lieberman, who works as a paid international spokesperson for the breast-cancer research group. more ›

Hours Before Primary, Candidates Make Their Final Push

Hours Before Primary, Candidates Make Their Final Push

John McCain's Straight Talk Express headed into Manhattan today, taking him to Grand Central Terminal where he got the endorsement of former governor George Pataki. McCain, along with wife Cindy, appeared with Pataki, Alphonse D'Amato, Joseph Lieberman and Rudy Giuliani as the Republican candidate appears to be leading in many Super Tuesday polls over rivals Mitt Romney, Mike Huckabee and Ron Paul. more ›

Mayor Heads to Ireland, Where Protestors Await

Mayor Heads to Ireland, Where Protestors Await

Ah, the global community! Mayor Bloomberg, who put off a trip to Ireland last month because of a little ol' Queens blackout situation, is finally headed to Eire tomorrow. However, two groups who oppose U.S. policy in Iraq and Lebanon will be on hand when the Mayor will take part in a dedication ceremony for a Fighting 69th monument. The NY Times notes that the Mayor's support of noted Iraq war supporter Senator Joseph Lieberman as well as his support of President Bush's pro-Israel stance is warranting a "peace vigil" and demonstration tomorrow. Indymedia Ireland posters even note how much it costs to travel to the areas where Bloomberg is visiting, in case people want to join in. Well, it's good that the Mayor will have a bit of protest to follow him around - we wonder if the Ballymote and Sligo police have tactics akin to the NYPD. more ›

Later, Lieberman - It's Lamont Time

Later, Lieberman - It's Lamont Time

Now this was a primary. Ned Lamont defeated Connecticut Senator Joseph Lieberman in yesterday's Senate primary, 51% to 48%. Lieberman still plans to run in November's Senate race as a third party "petitioning candidate." A petitioning candidate with better website security, we imagine, after his campaign accused Lamont's of crashing their server, leading them to put up a statement:

"For the past 24 hours the Friends for Joe Lieberman's website and email has been totally disrupted and disabled, we believe that this is the result of a coordinated attack by our political opponents. The campaign has notified the US Attorney and the Connecticut Chief State's Attorney and the campaign will be filing a formal complaint reflecting our concerns. The campaign has also notified the State Attorney General Dick Blumenthal for his review."
Of course, the liberal bloggers are being credited with helping Lamont's victory - let's see how it works in the general elections in November. more ›

Democrats Debate in Iowa

Democrats Debate in Iowa

As the area's favorite Knick turned Senator, Bill Bradley, endorses Howard Dean, Gothamist decided to read about the Democratic debate in Iowa yesterday. The Times' David Halbfinger noted the absence of Al Sharpton, "For sheer comedic appeal, the Democratic presidential debate on Sunday was short a Sharpton..." Ah, Lorne Michaels was so on the ball in asking the Reverend to host SNL. Unintentional funniness seems to have come from one John Kerry supporter held a sign saying, "J.K. all the way," which at first seems like "Just Kidding all the way to the caucus," and the name of The Des Moines Register editor who moderated the debate: Paul Anger, who told Dean and Joseph Lieberman "to take it outside, if you need to.'" Ah, there's nothing like missing a boring debate where the Democrats don't come any closer to figuring out who can challenge Dean. more ›
