Wordless Music Series With Mangum, Greenwood

Wordless Music Series With Mangum, Greenwood

Back in 2007 we talked to Ronen Givony, who had just started up the Wordless Music Series. One month later, Radiohead's Jonny Greenwood was talking to us about participating in the series, and this year the series turns 5 years old. Their anniversary announcement landed in our inbox with some big names attached to it, namely Jeff Mangum of Neutral Milk Hotel, and Jonny Greenwood (back for an encore). The next season will begin in September, but there are also some shows left for the current season. Details below for all NYC shows can be found here, but here are the two big ones for the East Coast—tickets on sale this weekend. more ›

Oscar Loves Michael Clayton, Blood, Old Men, Juno

Oscar Loves Michael Clayton, Blood, Old Men, Juno

  • Perhaps the big surprise (besides Juno getting nominated for Best Director and Best Picture) was Ruby Dee for her work in American Gangster (its only other nomination was for art direction)
Then of course there is Julian Schnabel, whose film The Diving Bell and the Butterfly got a nomination for direction. NYMag doesn't think this will be enough for him, however. Some other notes:
  • Angelina Jolie wasn't nominated for A Mighty Heart
  • The Academy had less Anglophilia this year, as Atonement was shut out of Best Director, Best Actress, and Best Actor
  • The critically acclaimed Zodiac was shut out
  • "Falling Slowly" from Once was nominated (yay!)
  • Jonny Greenwood is ineligible for his work on the There Will Be Blood score (boo!)
  • Four of the five documentaries nominated are related to the Iraq war (the fifth is Michael Moore's Sicko);
  • If the axiom about Best Picture winners having a film editing nomination is true, than No Country for Old Men and There Will Be Blood are the two Best Picture front runnersThe main nominations are after the jump and who do you think should win an Oscar this year?

MUSIC: When we talked to Jonny Greenwood (pictured) back in October, Radiohead's In Rainbows wasn't the only focus. His composition titled Popcorn Superhet Receiver will be performed tonight by The Wordless Music Orchestra with Brad Lubman as conductor. When we asked Greenwood if he would be in attendance, he said "I’d love to but I can’t really justify the flight just to come to that. I’d feel a bit weird about it. If I was in America already for touring or something I’d love to go but I can’t really justify it. It’s a shame." Since you won't be using as many carbon emissions to get there, we suggest you go. more ›

    Gothamist Year In Interviews

We interviewed hundreds of people this year, from long-time rockers to the designer of New York’s subway map. Here are a few conversations you may have missed:

    A Conversation with Jonny Greenwood

    A Conversation with Jonny Greenwood

Jonny Greenwood was named the BBC’s composer-in-residence in 2004; during this time he debuted "Popcorn Superhet Receiver", a twenty-minute work for string orchestra inspired, in part, by the phenomenon of white noise and Penderecki’s "Threnody for the Victims of Hiroshima". Tickets are on sale for a two-night performance of the composition at The Church of St. John the Apostle in January as part of The Wordless Music Series; works by John Adams and Gavin Bryars will also be performed. more ›

Radiohead: Live From New York/Last Night

Our camera battery died two songs in, but here are the pictures we managed to get. Above is a clip we found on YouTube from the show last night, of the band playing "Fake Plastic Trees". Enjoy, and if you are going tonight...we are both jealous of, and excited for, you. more ›
