Duane Reade Shoplifter Just Wanted John Starks' Autograph!

Last we heard from former Knick John Starks, he was trying to woo LeBron James with sweet video real estate moves. Now it seems the 1994 NBA Finals star was getting his celebrity-endorsement on at a Union Square Duane Reade opening yesterday, when a drunk, amiable fan stole the show from him: "This guy filled his shirt with stuff and security caught him. While they were escorting him out, he was screaming, 'I just want John Starks' autograph!' " said a witness. The unfazed Starks continued to sign autographs, offering to babysit for a die-hard fan celebrating his birthday, which makes him sound a lot cooler than some other prominent celebrity endorsers. more ›

NBA 'Tips Off' Season in Union Square

NBA 'Tips Off' Season in Union Square

The weather outside may be frightful, but that's not going to stop the NBA from tipping off their 2008-2009 season in Union Square. Starting earlier this morning and ending at 7PM, the NBA Tip Off Celebration will feature past NBA stars and current Knicks players. From 12-3PM, former Knicks players John Starks, Charles Smith, Kenny "Sky" Walker, and Clyde Frazier will be on hand with the Knicks City Dancers. Presumably, it will be frowned upon to ask Starks about the 1994 NBA Finals and Smith about the 1993 Eastern Conference Finals. If nostalgia's not your cup of tea, current Knicks players David Lee, Nate Robinson, Malik Rose and Danilo Gallinari will be on hand from 4-6PM. While the first regular season NBA game is tonight, the Knicks and Nets don't start their seasons until tomorrow. more ›

Ewing Inducted into Hall of Fame

Ewing Inducted into Hall of Fame

Patrick Ewing -- and some faces he probably found familiar -- got his much-deserved Hall of Fame induction Friday night in Springfield, Mass. Among those also being enshrined were Pat Riley, who coached Ewing and Hakeem Olajuwon, who won one of his two NBA titles at Ewing's expense. Ewing will partly be remembered for not winning a championship, but any Knicks fan who holds that -- a result that is much to blame on John Starks as anyone else -- doesn't appreciate what Ewing brought to the court. Ewing retired as the Knicks all-time leader in points, rebounds, steals, blocks and games played. Riley got in mostly for his time at the helm of the Lakers, but he's left his stamp on the Knicks and Heat. Ewing's decision to not wear pants earlier in the day was also a good move. more ›

Ewing Makes Hall, With a Bitter Twist

Ewing Makes Hall, With a Bitter Twist

The little children out there may have trouble remembering it, but the Knicks were once good. In fact, they even played in the NBA Finals in 1994. Patrick Ewing did all he could, but when John Starks went 2-for-18 in Game 7, he helped keep Ewing on the Dan Marino list of greatest sports stars to never win a ring. more ›

Grieving Knicks Find Unity Off the Court

Grieving Knicks Find Unity Off the Court

Yesterday's Knicks practice was cancelled so that the entire team could attend the funeral for Don Marbury, father of Knicks captain Stephon Marbury. Don Marbury died during the Knicks' Sunday night game. Despite being a team often criticized for lacking chemistry, they all stood together at the Coney Island Gospel Assembly on Neptune Ave. to support their point guard during his difficult time. Malik Rose spoke on behalf of the team to the 600-plus... more ›
