Last Night's Action: Waiting For Change In Washington

Last Night's Action: Waiting For Change In Washington

  • Rangers 3 Chicago 2 (OT): For a team that gives up short-handed goals by the bushel, drawing a penalty in overtime must have seemed like a mixed blessing. But, the Rangers converted on a great redirection by Chris Drury to win the game. New York has a huge matchup coming up with Pittsburgh on Sunday.

    Last Night's Action: Another Shutout

    Last Night's Action: Another Shutout

Devils 5, Stars 0: The Sean Avery reunion tour is making all the stops in the metropolitan area. Martin Brodeur is also making all the stops. He recorded his 98th career shutout as the Devils cruised and didn't appear to worry about the perennial pest Avery. more ›

Last Night's Action: The Devils Are Back In It

The game was a war, with both teams hitting legally and at times illegally, though the refs seemed interested in calling anything. Martin Brodeur and Ryan Callahan had a huge collision in the third period, which Brodeur was lucky to escape from without injury. Sean Avery scored a goal and pissed people off while Brandon Dubinsky had two goals for New York. The teams get two nights off to heal up for Game 4 on Wednesday night. more ›

Last Night's Action: Looking Bad Against the Worst

Last Night's Action: Looking Bad Against the Worst

    • 76ers 124, Knicks 84: For the second time this season, the Knicks got blown out by the second-worst team in the division. How is that possible? Start with nine turnovers in the first quarter alone -- and 23 for the game. Sprinkle in some porous defense and everything should come out just fine. The Knicks lost by 40 despite shooting 46 percent from the floor. Too bad Philadelphia made 57 percent of its shots.
    • Nets 110, Bulls 102 (OT): Even without Devin Harris, the best player the Nets got in exchange for Jason Kidd, the Nets were able to take down the Bulls at home. Marcus Williams played 39 minutes and had 25 points. If he can play remotely like that down the stretch, the Nets may find themselves a first-round victim rather than draft-lottery hopeful.
    • Islanders 3, Capitals 2: Suddenly, the Islanders can't be stopped. One game after he helped his team stun the Sharks, Mike Comrie scored the only goal in the shootout and helped New York to its fifth straight win. This was the second consecutive time they rallied from a two-goal deficit. Miroslav Satan and Josef Vasicek lit the lamp in regulation.

Last Night's Action: Friday Night Meltdown

Thrashers 4, Devils 3 (SO): John Madden put the Devils up a goal with 8:45 remaining, but with 18 seconds to go, Atlanta's Marian Hossa got the equalizer. The teams went 10 rounds in a shootout before the Thrashers emerged on top. Eighteen seconds away from two points, and instead the Devils settle for one. This was the second straight overtime game for the Devils, who also play Saturday. more ›

Last Night's Action: Overly Gracious Hosts

Last Night's Action: Overly Gracious Hosts

    • Coyotes 5, Rangers 1: Wayne Gretzky returned to Madison Square Garden, the site of his final game as a player, to coach his Phoenix club to an easy win over the Rangers. His voice was hoarse because of a flu and laryngitis. Similar symptoms sidelined New York goalie Henrik Lundqvist, and Steve Valiquette wasn't up to the challenge of facing the worst offense in the Western Conference. Thanks to the wonders of the unbalanced schedule and the lockout, this was Phoenix's first trip to New York since 2002. At the rate the Rangers played against them, they might not want them back for another five years.
    • Devils 4, Flyers 2: What more can be said about Martin Brodeur? He excelled in net again, and the Devils used his stopping of a penalty shot as a morale-booster during their home win over the Flyers. John Madden had two goals and an assist. more ›

Last Night's Action: Watching the Same Team?

Last Night's Action: Watching the Same Team?

Mavericks 99, Knicks 89: Are James Dolan and Isiah Thomas watching the same team the fans are? More boos were heard in Madison Square Garden during the latest Knicks debacle. But James Dolan and Isiah Thomas don't seem to hear them -- or feel the "Fire Isiah" chants are justified. What more evidence do they need? A loss to the Mavericks, the team that finished with the best record in the NBA last season, wouldn't... more ›

    Last Night's Action: Disconcerting Start

Cavaliers 110, Knicks 106: Throughout his tumultuous summer, Isiah Thomas seemed to want to use basketball to shield himself from sexual harassment lawsuit he eventually lost. If he was devoting any amount of energy to preparing his team for its first game against Cleveland, he failed miserably. His team looked out of sorts as it got the season off on the wrong foot. Letting LeBron James score 45 points is understandable. Choosing not to guard... more ›

Last Night's Action: Not Enough For The Knicks

  • Toronto 106 Nets 69: The Raptors sent a message tonight, humiliating New Jersey on their home floor. Toronto built a 15-point lead at halftime on a 65-foot heave from Chris Bosh and never looked back. Richard Jefferson had 27 points in the loss while six Raptors scored in double figures.

    Umenyiora 6, Philadelphia 3

    Umenyiora 6, Philadelphia 3

John Madden said it best on the air, “Osi Umenyiora made the Pro Bowl in one night tonight”. Umenyiora turned in one of the greatest games by a defensive end ever, sacking Donovan McNabb six times officially and just missing out on a few other opportunities. And it wasn’t just Umenyiora, the defense had a dominating night. recording 12 sacks and holding the Eagles to only three points in the 16-3 win. Aaron Ross added some coverage to the secondary, Michael Strahan broke LT’s sack record, Kawika Mitchell had a fumble return for a touchdown and Antonio Pierce was everywhere. more ›

Last Night's Action: Scary Situation at The Garden

Knuble escaped the collision with fractures to his cheekbone and orbital bone. He is expected to have surgery when the swelling goes down. Last Night's Action: The Rangers Get The Win

The Devils jumped out to an early lead off of a John Madden goal, but New York took a 2-1 lead in the third after Petr Prucha scored his ninth goal of the year. Thomas Pock was called for tripping with just under five minutes left and the Devils converted to tie the game. more ›

Last Night's Action: One Bad Start, Another Bad Finish

Last Night's Action: One Bad Start, Another Bad Finish

-Timberwolves 107, Knicks 89: Lackadaisical defense and inconsistent offense plagued the Knicks, who have lost three straight since undressing the Heat in Miami on Friday. Minnesota torched the Knicks by shooting 53 percent from the floor, and New York couldn't make the most of its shots. Quentin Richardson, one player who has appeared to benefit from Isiah Thomas' coaching, did not score and didn't attempt a field goal in 18 minutes. At least Steve Francis took his demotion from the starting lineup well -- he scored 19 points, including eight of nine free throws. The Knicks are 0-8 when they score fewer than 100 points. more ›

Monday Night As You Knew It - Done

Monday Night As You Knew It - Done

Well, stick a fork in Monday Night Football, because just about the only thing you might recognize next season is the theme song and maybe Hank Williams, Jr. Only a few short days after Al Michaels called Superbowl XL, ABC and Michaels have parted ways. Michaels has been with Monday Night Football on ABC since 1986 and was reportedly reluctant to move to ESPN's MNF coverage after most of the MNF team decided to move to NBC's Sunday night coverage. It is expected that NBC Michaels will soon announce that he is joining their coverage. more ›

    Welcome to Canton, Mr. Carson

http://www.profootballhof.com/hall/story.jsp?story_id=1953">anncounced its 2006 class, which finally included New York Giants linebacker Harry Carson. Carson spent all 13 seasons of his NFL career, from 1976-1988, with the Giants and was named to 9 Pro Bowl teams including 7 straight from 1982-1988. It was the Carson's 12th year of eligibility and 7th time as a finalist for the Hall of Fame. With the yearly rejections becoming a "burden" for Carson, 52, wrote a letter to the Hall in 2004 requesting that his name be removed from consideration and has said that he would not go to Canton if voted in. He has since reconsidered. When the Hall of Fame called to notify Carson of his election, he was on a plane to Hawaii and he first found out that he was elected from a fan who congratulated him at the airport. Carson thought it was a joke. more ›

    Problems Ahead?

    Dog Eat Dogma World

    Dog Eat Dogma World

Someone writes to the NY Times to bitch Lars von Trier: "Lars von Trier could at least acknowledge that we mere humans, whatever politics we embrace, have bladders. Like Oliver Stone's "Nixon," Mr. von Trier's new film, rather than representing historical or social commentary, is about his inner Dogville. It seems to me that Mr. von Trier would do better to make shorter films, closer to home." Meow! Von Trier is accused of being anti-American, which isn't so strange these days, but he's infamously has never been to the United States (Dancer in the Dark and Dogville, both set in the U.S., were filmed in Euore), and his IMDB entry has the fascinating piece of trivia about his trip to Cannes: "He has so many phobias, he could only make the trip in a specially outfitted trailer." Oh, that's just like John Madden and the Madden-mobile! more ›
