In the beginning of his ribald and heartfelt solo comedy Ghetto Klown, John Leguizamo projects a subway map of New York onto a giant screen. "I'm from the scrotum of Queens, next to the penis of Manhattan," he explains, as a black magic marker suddenly reveals the uncanny anatomical resemblance heretofore hidden in our familiar subway map. "You'll never be able to look at the subway map the same way again," he adds, and the moment is representative of Ghetto Klown at its best: after seeing the city through Leguizamo's eyes, you can't help but take a little bit of his salty perspective with you out on the streets.

With Cycling Injuries Down, John Leguizamo Wants You to Bike
Despite a boom in the number of people riding bikes around NYC, the number of reported injuries sustained while cycling is declining. Last year, 2,730 cyclists were injured and 12 killed in traffic crashes, according to the DMV. In 2008, there were 2,916 injuries and 26 deaths. As you can see by this handy graph, cyclist injuries have dropped every year but three since 1998. (A high of 5,205.) However, fatalities are a different story; according to Streetsblog, cyclist deaths don't show any real pattern over the same period.

The Cinecultist's Weekly Movie Picks: Neo-Noir Edition
This week the multiplexes seem practically flooded with new releases, in addition to the good things already out, so much so that Gothamist is starting to fall behind on our movie consumption. But never fear, we shall surely rally. Here's a few suggestions to guide your own weekend viewing.
Sundance Report: Tuesday, January 25
Sundance is definitely in full swing - you can tell by all the blurry-eyed revelers wandering up and down Main Street. We're trying to make all the rounds, but it's difficult because we actually have paying work to do at the festival.
Movies at Alice Tully Hall
Movies at Alice Tully Hall Alice Tully Hall is where many New York Film Festival films are screened, and for the first year, where New Directors/New Films is taking place. My fondness of Alice Tully Hall also stems from the fact that by now, I know the optimal seats for movie viewing as well as talk participation.
