Coney Island Makeover Includes Big Fancy Condo Towers

Coney Island Makeover Includes Big Fancy Condo Towers

While some of us have been bemoaning the new changes to Coney Island's amusement district, further west down the boardwalk another dramatic development has largely escaped public notice, until now. Gristede's billionaire John Catsimatidis wants to change the zoning laws for a second time in order to build three big condominium towers for a project called "Ocean Dreams," where some 400 units would be sold for market price. Located on the site of what is now parking lots used for school bus parking, the development would be built next to a quiet gated community called Sea Gate. As you can see from these renderings, this is quite an ambitious and optimistic project! But will the city let Catsimatidis's dreams come true? more ›

Billionaire Catsimatidis Unsure If He'll Run For Mayor, But Doesn't Want Someone Taxing The Rich

Gristede's billionaire John Catsimatidis has long been interested in being Mayor of New York, and recently he met with national GOP head, Reince Priebus, though not about local politics (maybe they were discussing the Nixons?). But he tells the Observer, "I've got mixed emotions about it now. Right now I am going to observe and see what is going on." more ›

Nixon's Grandson Hearts Gristede's Supermarket Heiress

The NY Post is having a good time over the engagement of Christopher Cox, son of NY State GOP chair Ed Cox and grandson of Richard Nixon, and Andrea Catsimatidis, whose father is Gristede's supermarket chain billionaire (and one-time sorta mayoral hopeful) John Catsimatidis. Here's some choice snark: "Everyone's snickering behind their back...He brings her to these very staid Republican events and she's in a miniskirt. It's the political equivalent of 'The Addams Family.'" more ›

Nice Try, Trader Darwin: Gristedes Sued for TJs Ripoff

Nice Try, Trader Darwin: Gristedes Sued for TJs Ripoff

It's not uncommon to hear New Yorkers complaining about how overwhelmed they are by the lines at the Union Square Trader Joe's that most hours of the day tend to snake through the store—often leading to a journey just to find where the end of it is. So passers-by on 14th Street must be feeling relieved now that they've spotted a "Trader John's" moving in just down the street in the space that a regular old Gristedes had been, right? Not so fast. more ›

Catsimatidis Sets Up Mayoral Exploratory Committe

The billionaire owner of Gristedes is getting his ducks in a row for a possible mayoral run in 2009. NY1 reports John Catsimaditis is "hiring staff and launching an exploratory committee," per a letter to the city's GOP officials. Like the current billionaire mayor, Catsimaditis shed his Democratic affiliation for the Republican party. Last year, Forbes listed him at #220 on the Forbes 400, noting his estimated fortune of $2.1 billion. And for reference, Bloomberg spent about $74 million to get elected in 2001. more ›

Will the Big Apple Today, Keep Fresh Fruits and Veggies Away?

Will the Big Apple Today, Keep Fresh Fruits and Veggies Away?

An effort to get more fresh fruit and vegetables into the hands of poorer and allegedly under-served communities is being fought today by bodega and supermarket owners, who feel that a proposed 1,500 new street vendor licenses will cut into their business. Backers of the new licenses include City Council Speaker Christine Quinn and Mayor Bloomberg, who cooperated in introducing the "Green Cart" plan, which will issue licenses to vendors who commit to serving fresh fruit and vegetables in poorer communities. more ›

City Council: Stores Should Recycle Plastic Bags

City Council: Stores Should Recycle Plastic Bags

  • Record their amount of plastic bags that "recollect, transport and recycle" as well as a "submit annual reports to the Sanitation Department"City Council spokesman Anthony Hogrebe told the Daily News, "It's not a ban. It's a bill that's tailored, we believe, to address the specific needs of New York City and what we think would work best." However, that didn't make Gristede's CEO - and potential 2009 mayoral candidate - John Catsimatidis happy. He told CityRoom, "We’re not set up to become garbage disposal areas for Christine Quinn. I’m not sure she’s ever been in business in her life. I’ve been in business for 39 years as C.E.O. of a company." more ›

  • Grocer Willing to Produce Green in Express Lane to Mayor's Office

Grocer Willing to Produce Green in Express Lane to Mayor's Office

John Catsimatidis is hoping to follow in Mayor Bloomberg's footsteps by becoming a Democrat who follows the path of least resistance into Gracie Mansion. The owner of the Gristedes supermarket chain has millions of dollars to burn and would like to become the Mayor of New York City. Even for a lifelong Democrat like Catsimatidis, the easiest road to City Hall is to bypass the scrum of party politics and simply get oneself elected as a Republican in a heavily Democratic city. Green apparently beats both red and blue in the media center of the world, and it's possible for enough cash to overcome many obstacles. more ›

Gristedes Owner Predicts Rents Will Drive Supermarkets Out of NYC

Gristedes Owner Predicts Rents Will Drive Supermarkets Out of NYC

No one has been surprised that Gristedes supermarkets have been closing steadily over the past ten years, given the influx of other grocery options and rising rents. But the NY Times has a fascinating article on why Gristedes still manages to exist, despite shrinking in size. more ›

Barack in New York, Clinton Says "She's Going to Go For This"

Barack in New York, Clinton Says "She's Going to Go For This"

Illinois Senator Barack Obama was in New York yesterday as speculating about the 2008 Presidential race started to reach a fever pitch (or as much of a fever pitch as possible this early on). He spoke at a fundraiser for Kids in Distressed situations, saying, "We have an empathy deficit. It's time for a sense of empathy to infuse our politics in America. It is time to stop making excuses for inaction." The Daily News reports his speech "invoked [Robert] Kennedy's famous 1967 trip to Mississippi to expose the horrors of child poverty in America" - which one person thought was a "cheap shot. You don't start your campaign on the mantle of someone else's success." The NY Times notes that while Obama got two standing ovations, "his performance was not flawless: at one point he referred to 'Jose' Posada of the New York Yankees instead of Jorge." And Posada happened to be one of the fundraiser's honorees and was sitting at Obama's table! more ›
