No more naming streets like Joey Ramone Place, Peter Jennings Way, Bob Marley Boulevard, or Jerry Orbach Way. If one City Council member gets his way, the commemorative naming of streets would stop because it's too much of a time waster for the council. James Oddo, the council's minority leader from Staten Island, wants to give the Department of Transportation the authority to approve new street names. Currently, the City Council has to approve the names after they are approved by local community boards. We find it shocking that a politician wants to give away power.

As we heard last week, Doc Martens released upon the world a new ad campaign starring some familiar faces: Kurt Cobain, Sid Vicious, Joe Strummer and Joey Ramone. The deceased musicians were depicted wearing the shoes in "heaven," but there was no approval for using their images. Courtney Love promptly issued a statement, the ad company was fired and Doc Martens - though apologetic - looked really, really bad. Now Joey Ramone's brother, Mickey Leigh, has issued the following statement:

There's Joey Ramone Place and Peter Jennings Way. But getting a street named after the city's arguably most famous TV detective who was also a Broadway legend is no easy task. The NY Times has the full story about the quest for Jerry Orbach's name to grace a street corner. Specifically the corner of West 53rd and 8th Avenue, where he and his wife Elaine Orbach lived.

It's hard to believe, but Joey Ramone has been dead for five years. Today is his birthday, and to celebrate and remember him, Ramones super-fans are visiting spots in Queens and Manhattan. Nonsense-NY has the details:

CBGB's, home of Country, Blue Grass, Blues & Other Music For Urban Gourmandisers, will eventually be leaving its home on the Bowery and Joey Ramone Place for greener pastures.

Here's the Ramones' official website. Joey died in 2001, Dee Dee died in 2002, and now drummer Tommy is the only surviving original Ramone (Coolfer pointed out to us "second drummer Marky is still alive, as is second bass player CJ"). The Ramones were boys from Queens, and there was an NPR piece about John Langford going to Queens to find Joey's ghost. A street in the East Village is named "Joey Ramone Place" - we'll see if another part is named after Johnny. Joey Ramone will be a part of East Village permanently as the corner of 2nd Street and Bowery will be named "Joey Ramone Place." Coolfer points out that street is where CBGB's is as well as some good eating. While this is great news, "Joey Ramone Place" sort of sounds like it could be "Joey Ramone's Place," which seems very punk-rocker-retirement-home to Gothamist.
