Jimmy McMillan may have captured the hearts and minds of New Yorkers with his "Rent Is Too Damn High" platform during last year's gubernatorial election, but his rent for a one-bedroom in the East Village is actually a Damn Sweet $872/month, thanks to rent stabilization. Now, the colorful candidate may be evicted, because his landlord wants to make the rent DAMN HIGH.

Video: Jimmy McMillan Serenades Occupy Wall Street Protesters
Noted protest singer and Deep Throat aficionado Jimmy McMillan has been stopping by Zuccotti Park to visit Occupy Wall Street protesters frequently over the last three weeks. Someone caught him performing a new mostly spoken-word song—we'll venture a guess that it's titled "Wall Street" or "Listen To This, Listen To This, Listen To This"—all about how the constitution gives you the right to protest and picket and vote for the wrong person. Watch that below, as well as two other videos from other times he popped up downtown—including one in which McMillan goes off on a rant about Ron Paul.
Jimmy McMillan Tells Us He Gives A Damn About Israel, SNL And Homemade Porn
Jimmy McMillan is a man of many talents and titles—karate expert, beard aficionado, stripper, action figure, Vietnam vet, viral star, and sole member of The Rent Is Too Damn High Party. Jimmy stopped by our offices this week with filmmakers Aaron Fisher-Cohen and Kristian Almgren to talk about their new documentary, Damn! The film charts McMillan's overnight rise from fringe party candidate to viral sensation after his unforgettable debut at the 2010 gubernatorial debate—but as most conversations with McMillan go, ours weaved off into tangents on everything from his love of Ronald Reagan to SNL's influence on him, his Israeli fanbase, his raunchy career as a porn star, and his unyielding belief in a youth revolution.
Former Porn Star Jimmy McMillan Gives Sex Advice In New Video
Notorious former gubernatorial candidate and beard aficionado Jimmy McMillan stopped by our offices yesterday with filmmakers Aaron Fisher-Cohen and Kristian Almgren to talk about their new documentary, Damn! The film charts McMillan's overnight rise from fringe party candidate to viral sensation after his unforgettable debut at the 2010 gubernatorial debate—but as most conversations with McMillan go, ours weaved off into tangents on everything from SNL's influence on him, to his Israeli fanbase, his raunchy career as a porn star (there are videos floating around out there...), and his views on environmentalism:
Video: Jimmy McMillan Loves Pot, Eminem, And Deep Throat
Hours after we spoke to Jimmy McMillan about his current rent woes, a new clip has been put online showing our favorite former gubernatorial candidate waxing rhapsodic about some of his favorite things. The makers of Damn!, the documentary on McMillan made during his rise-to-internet-fame last fall, released a deleted scene from the film today. In it, McMillan talks about his favorite rapper (Eminem), his favorite movie (Deep Throat—"I'd like for every girl to practice that skill. If you've got a man, treat him right!") and his unabashed appreciation for pot: "Oh hell yeah. I was a pot-smoking motherf--er. You can tell everybody that." Watch the clip below:
Jimmy McMillan's Rent Is Too Damn Low...So He's Facing Eviction
When Jimmy McMillan, the founding (and thus far only) member of the Rent Is Too Damn High Party, first Smurfed his way into our lives, there was only one thing to talk about, and it came in mantra-form: the rent is too damn high. And though that message has somewhat expanded since then, that has always been McMillan's central theme. But now, McMillan claims that his East Village landlords are trying to evict him: "The landlord is trying to get me out for more money. I'm a disabled vet, and he's messing with the wrong guy," McMillan told us this morning.
The Brakes Are Too Damn Slow!
The weather is too damn hot! The car is too damn cramped! The insurance is too damn high! A tipster wrote us last night: "My man Jimmy McMillan in a fender bender at President and Nostrand around 7 this evening. Did not have time to catch all the onlookers and cops." It's good to see he's keeping cool with those sleeveless shirts...but where are his psychological gloves??
Jimmy McMillan Owns CPAC, Supports Shoe Marriage
Yesterday, New York's own Jimmy McMillan showed up to the Conservative Political Action Conference, firing up young conservatives and issuing a slew of juicy soundbites. “I’m here to change it all up,” he said. “Why? Because the rent is too damn high." Here are some of his best utterances:
Video: Jimmy McMillan Thinks Everything Is Too Damn High
So how do a bunch of kids unaffiliated with Daniels (who has not thrown his hat in the ring) get a guy like McMillan to come shoot a video for them? They ask. Yale junior Michael Knowles, the political director for the Draft Daniels group, tells Politico that they had originally looked at McMillan impersonators but were "thrilled" when the man himself agreed to do the spot for them (no word on what he was paid).
Video: Jimmy McMillan Thinks The Weather Is Too Damn Cold!
Jimmy McMillan may be running for president but that doesn't mean he doesn't need to pay his (modest) rent. So of course everyone's favorite The Rent is Too Damn High mayoral candidate has gone and made a commercial for WPIX's Linda Church. But what a commercial it is! We don't want to ruin it for you but quick! Go check on the elderly and bring your pets inside! "The weather is too damn cold!"
McMillan/Gingrich In 2012?
Now that Jimmy McMillan is planning to run for President as a damn Republican, he's considering his choices for VP running mates. And he certainly has his priorities straight! He said of possible choice Newt Gingrich, "[He] has been there before. He is a good liar." The interview only unravels from there.
Jimmy McMillan To Run For President...As A Damn Republican!
When Jimmy McMillan first came into our lives, it was about the issues one issue, man. He stood for something, something that affected each and every one of us; the rent was too damn high, and there was nothing else to talk about. But in the last few months since his heartbreaking gubernatorial defeat, Jimmy's changed. He's put out music videos, albums, action figures, and even performed in Greenpoint. In pursuing a music career, Jimmy sold out all those ideals that one thing he believed in. That's what we thought at least, until this morning, when Jimmy appeared on the Libertarian Internet talk show "Revolution Radio" and announced that he will run for President in 2012.
Video: Jimmy McMillan Continues Music Career in Brooklyn
It's good to know that even though Jimmy McMillan will not be running our state, he can still make rent with his music. A reader sent us this video of Jimmy McMillan's show at Europa in Greenpoint on Thursday night, writing, "unfortunately, my camera died after about 30 seconds, or I would've taped the whole concert. It was truly absurd and amazing." It's unclear why he brought his friend along to translate the set through interpretive dance, but at least she shares his penchant for gloves.
Jimmy McMillan To Perform In Greenpoint Live!
Oh sure, you could watch a movie about Jimmy McMillan, or listen to his damn cool album, or even play with his action figure. But one can't just passively appreciate the founder of The Rent Is Too Damn High Party and expect to truly get it. Luckily, here's your chance to receive the full Jimmy experience: next Thursday at Europa in Greenpoint, McMillan will perform his rambling odes to all-things-rent (except the musical) live. So shave and groom your facial hair appropriately, don your finest purple gloves, and get your Papa Smurf on, because this could be the start of a damn holiday tradition, and there is nothing else to talk about.
Video: The Rent Is Too Damn High, The Movie
Jimmy McMillan has already blurred the line between parody and sincerity with his gloves, his album, and frankly his entire campaign. But just because the campaign is over doesn't mean the publicity boat has sailed! Filmmakers Aaron Fisher-Cohen and Kristian Almgren have just finished their documentary on the gubarnatorial-candidate-turned-national-hero, DAMN!, and are planning to release it at SXSW in March. But will the public's attention have waned by then?
What Are Politicians Eating For Thanksgiving?
By now you've surely solidified your Thanksgiving menu and are bracing for the onslaught of dishes you'll be faced with after the Jets game. But in case you're one of those people who just can't help planning next year, the state's politicians want to help out. WNYC blog It's A Free Country has compiled Thanksgiving recipes from some of the state's pols. Don't worry, Sandra Lee didn't contribute any of her wacky concoctions. (Kwanzaa Cake anyone?)
Jimmy McMillan Wants $350 Million Damn Dollars
Don't get us wrong: we love us some Jimmy McMillan. He looks like Papa Smurf, he has awesome music videos, and a connoisseurs eye for gloves. Hell, we've had no evidence that there is anyone in the Rent Is Too Damn High Party besides him, so he really is a one-man political wrecking crew. But now, Jimmy may be taking it a bit too far by suing the Board of Elections for taking the word "damn" off of his ballot line...in 2006 and 2009.
McMillan Wants To Meet Cuomo "Very Soon"
Though he has retired from politics and will presumably be focusing on his new album (which still has a near-perfect rating on iTunes), he had a few words for new Governor-elect Andrew Cuomo, which the Daily News calls "advice" but sounds more like McMillan is thumbing his nose at Cuomo one last time. "Without any money to run for office, paid staff members, political support or resources of any kind," McMillan wrote to Cuomo. "My campaign was a clear and concise illustration of 'doing more with less.'" He then added, "I look forward to meeting with you very soon." Cuomo's next political adviser?
Jimmy McMillan Lost The Election, Won Our Hearts
Despite releasing his awesome music video, Jimmy McMillan of the Rent Is Too Damn High party squeaked by with just under 40,000 votes, making the party ineligible for legitimate party backing in the next election. But as far as we're concerned, this is still the year of Jimmy McMillan! After spending years behind the Rent Is Too Damn High party, he got a chance to debate other candidates, was parodied on SNL, and yesterday his highly anticipated album dropped on iTunes, at the not-too-damn-high price of $9.99! Praise is already flooding in.
Jimmy McMillan Music Video: Need We Say More?
Polls are open until 9 p.m. today, and in case you still haven't voted, perhaps a last minute kickass music video from gubernatorial candidate Jimmy McMillan of the Rent Is Too Damn High party will sway your decision. The plot centers around (surprise) McMillan getting evicted, dancing with girls wearing plaid and fur hats, and includes spoken-word lyrics like, "all poor people are being run out of New York." Poetry? Bad rap music? Publicity stunt? The shark jumping once and for all? Whatever it is, his entire album is on iTunes today. We personally can't wait for the "Rent Party Christmas" music video. Paladino and Cuomo Campaigns Are Sausage Fests
Gubernatorial candidates Andrew Cuomo and Carl Paladino may differ on marijuana, gay pride parades and campaigning techniques, but there is one thing they have in common: not having women in their inner circles. Neither major party candidate uses women as key policy advisers, instead putting them in ceremonial organizational positions, and using their wives, mothers and daughters as tools for their campaigns, according to the Times.
Video: Jimmy McMillan Doesn't Want To Talk About His Rent
Jimmy McMillan, the darling of last week's NY gubernatorial debate, made another appearance on MSNBC's The Last Word. After showing the SNL skit spoofing the Vietnam veteran-turned-affordable housing advocate/politician, host Lawrence O'Donnell wanted to get to the bottom of how much McMillan actually pays for his one bedroom in Brooklyn. But McMillan sorta dodged the question, saying his movement is not about him.
Video: The Rent Is Too Damn High On SNL
Emma Stone was the bubbly host on last night's new episode of Saturday Night Live; she played fellow redhead Lindsay Lohan in one sketch, but was woefully underused otherwise, barely featured in half the skits. The cold open was completely devoid of laughs, but there were sketches lampooning some of our favorites, including a commercial with Brett Favre and his "no fly" jeans, and a solid Weekend Update with the return of Stefon, and Kenan Thompson doing a faithful take on karate-expert Jimmy McMillan, promising "breakfast, lunch and dinner" for everyone if he's elected (we're still hoping for a Taiwanese CGI of McMillan). You can click through to see those segments, plus highlight "Baby Spanx."
Video: Jimmy McMillan & Papa Smurf, Separated From Birth
Gubernatorial candidate Jimmy McMillan, of the RENT IS TOO DAMN HIGH party, was on The Wendy Williams Show today. Besides noting his resemblance to another wise figure, Williams chatted with him about his rent, asking him, "I understand you’re a 64-year old retired postal worker who lives in Brooklyn and paying $800 a month in rent?" To which McMillan said, "I pay a little bit more than that, but I want to focus on the people - that’s why I tell them that story, it’s not about me it’s about the people."
Rent Is Too Damn High Candidate's Rent Is Actually Low
Jimmy McMillan, the mustachioed and gloved gubernatorial candidate who debate- karate chopped his way into the zeitgeist with his rousing rhetoric, "The Rent is TOO DAMN HIGH," has been chatting with dozens of media outlets about his breakout performance during Monday's debate. But now it turns out that his own rent for a one-bedroom in Flatbush is just $800/month—and the NY Times reports, "Mr. McMillan said in an interview on Tuesday that for at least the last decade, he had lived rent free. 'We’re like family,” Mr. McMillan said of his landlords. 'They don’t want me to pay any money at all. I am basically living there rent free.'" Can he work his magic for the rest of us?!?
Jimmy McMillan On His Gloves, Being Cool, Rent
Last night, Jimmy McMillan of the Rent Is Too Damn High Party debated his way into the hearts of many Americans (if not the voting preferences of New Yorkers). He's on fire (according to Google) and his mustache and gloves are making statements. Oh, and why was he wearing gloves? He told the Daily News, "I’m a war vet. Don’t forget I was in Vietnam for two and half years and I have three Bronze Stars, but the chemicals of Agent Orange -- dioxin and a lot of other chemicals mixed up -- I would get sick. When I get home tonight, I know I’m not going to be able to breathe if I take them off. It could be psychological, I don’t know, but I just put em on and wear them anyway."
NY Governor's "Debate": Send In The Clowns, Lower Rents
The main takeaway from last night's New York gubernatorial debate: THE RENT IS TOO DAMN HIGH. Of course, we've known that since 2005, because Jimmy McMillan has been making his Rent Is Too Damn High Party platform known to New York City for a while, but during the debate, heavily favored Democratic candidate Andrew Cuomo was compelled to chime in, "I'm with Jimmy, the rent is too damn high."
NY Gubernatorial Candidates Debate Tonight!
Tonight is the lone debate in this year's governor's race, and it should be interesting, with Democrat Andrew Cuomo and Republican Carl Paladino joined by five third-party candidates—madam Kristin Davis who claims to have supplied former governor Eliot Spitzer with call girls; Libertarian candidate Warren Redlich; Green Party candidate Howie Hawkins; Freedom Party candidate and NYC Councilman Charles Barron; and Rent Is Too Damn High candidate Jimmy McMillan. The debate, held at Hofstra University, starts at 7 p.m.; according to Newsday, "The debate will be broadcast live on cable television stations News12 Long Island, NY1 News, NY1 Noticias and YNN. It also will be carried by National Public Radio stations and streamed live over news12.com, newsday.com, ny1.com and ny1noticias.com."
Let's Meet The (Other) Gubernatorial Candidates
Almost at the same time that Carl Paladino's television address was going out yesterday, Hofstra University and Newsday announced they would be holding the first (and only?) official debate of the 2010 NY gubernatorial race, and everybody was invited. Paladino was the only one of the seven candidates who hadn't agreed to the debate as of yesterday, though he has now, no thanks to Cuomo's shiftiness! ... So let's meet the candidates who aren't Paladino and Cuomo!
Rent is Too Damn High Party Being Torn Apart!
The Rent is Too Damn High Party just cannot catch a break. Besides being shockingly omitted from last night's debate, Mayoral candidate Jimmy McMillan has had to stand by and watch the Board of Elections cut the d-word from his party's name, stripping it of all its cachet. And now an internal rift in the party has forced McMillan to turn his back on the Rent Is Too Damn High nominee for comptroller—and instead endorse his Democratic rival.
