Jerry Bowens, the former cop who pled guilty to to the 2009 second-degree murder of his ex-girlfriend and shooting her friend in a Greenpoint apartment, was sentenced yesterday to 40 years to life. In court, the 13-year police veteran, previously been ejected from the force for stealing drugs and supplying them to informants, spoke highly of his victim, Catherine D’Onofrio, and expressed remorse for his actions—to no avail.
Ex-Cop Gets 40 Years For Killing Ex-Girlfriend
Former Cop Accused of Killing GF Says It Was an Accident
The corrupt cop accused of killing his girlfriend and shooting her friend says that the whole incident was merely an accident where he was actually threatening to kill himself. Jerry Bowens told investigators, "I threatened to kill myself and pulled out my gun and cocked the hammer. When I lifted up the gun, it accidentally went off, striking Catherine in the head." After Bowens's girlfriend Catherine Donofrio was shot, Bowens describes being in a trance as her friend Melissa Simmons raced into the bathroom. Bowens said, "I don't remember anything after that except that I began shooting into the bathroom and then ran out of the apartment...I remember seeing Melissa outside screaming about someone being shot in the building, but I didn't know who she was talking about." Bowens is locked up in Bellevue Hospital's psych ward, where he will receive an evaluation to see if he is fit to stand trial.
Corrupt Cop Who Shot Girlfriend Had More Victims on List
The crooked cop accused of fatally shooting his girlfriend and wounding her friend with a bullet to the head had even bigger plans. After officers arrested Jerry Bowens last week, they discovered a hit list of names titled "Dead Pool"—an allusion to a similar list in Dirty Harry. Bowens, a former NYPD narcotics officer who resigned last year in the face of corruption charges, apparently had three other victims in his sights. Two more of his girlfriend's female friends made the list because Bowens suspected them of setting her up with other men. And police sources tell the Post that number five on the list was an Internal Affairs Bureau cop who exposed Bowens's corruption, which involved stealing drugs from suspects and giving them to his own informants, including one who says she had sex with him. The last name was Bowen himself. His plan, apparently, was to commit suicide by cop after killing the IAB officer. But it was not to be; he's currently being held on a suicide watch at Bellevue.
Ex-Cop, Arrested For Killing Girlfriend, Tells Post, "I'm Crazy"
The former police officer who was arrested for fatally shooting his girlfriend and injuring her friend spoke to a NY Post reporter early Monday morning, apparently before he was arrested. Jerry Bowens said, "I'm the cop wanted for the shooting...I'm crazy. I want to kill myself, but the family wants me to turn myself in...I hurt my girlfriend."
Ex-Cop Suspected of Fatally Shooting Girlfriend
A former cop, previously named in a NYPD drug scandal, was arrested early this morning for allegedly killing his girlfriend and injuring her friend in the friend's Greenpoint apartment yesterday.
Bad Cops Traffic in Drugs, in League With Dealer
Two sergeants and a detective were arrested Friday after one was caught on tape providing information on surveillance vehicles to a drug dealer and the other two were caught supplying drugs and cash that they'd stolen from a supposed junkie and then returning it in exchange for information. Sgt. Roosevelt Green was a 12-year-veteran of the NYPD working out of the 62nd Precinct in Brooklyn, who was using a police laptop to run license plate IDs for drug dealer Frank (Big Banana) Wilson. The DEA was tapping Wilson's phone and overheard him discussing federal surveillance vehicles that Wilson suspected were rival dealers. Roosevelt, who was socially acquainted with Wilson (they worked out and played basketball together) accepted athletic gear and clothing in trade for the information. He could face up to ten years in prison.
