Last Night's Action: Avoiding the Hole

Last Night's Action: Avoiding the Hole

  • Mets 6, Nationals 2: Washington's so bad the Mets almost don't deserve credit for beating the Nationals in extra innings. But the win counts just the same, and it came thanks to the two hitters who are supposed to do damage: Carlos Beltran and David Wright. Castoff starter Jerome Williams held the Mets hitless or 5 1/3 innings -- and almost hit a home run -- but the Mets recovered in time. They'll play the rubber game Sunday.

Allan Houston Survives the "Allan Houston Rule"

Allan Houston Survives the "Allan Houston Rule"

True, the Knicks have too many "power" forwards, but how much hope is there that Houston will return to the Knicks. And if he does, will it be the Houston of old or even worth $20 million a year? Probably not. Besides, if you've got an exception that seems tailor-made for your player, why not go ahead and use it? Then again, when was the last time the Knickerbockers did something that made sense? more ›

    Isiah Makes His Move

    Isiah Makes His Move

The Knicks may be closer to adding some of the key free agents that they have pursuing all summer. According to various press reports, the Knicks and Bulls have agreed in principle to a deal that would send a newly resigned Jamal Crawford and Jerome Williams to the Big Apple for Dikembe Mutombo, Othella Harrington, Cezary Trybanski and Frank Williams. All four of the Knicks in the deal have contracts that expire at the end of the season. Knicks GM Isiah Thomas had wanted to include Shandon Anderson in the deal, but not even Bulls GM John Paxson is crazy enough to take on the rest of his contract. more ›

    Piazza Breaks Mark for Catchers

    Piazza Breaks Mark for Catchers

Last night, Mike Piazza hit his 352nd home run as a catcher, breaking the all-time record for the position, previously held by Carlton Fisk. The 405-foot shot to right-center came on a 3-1 pitch in the first inning off of Jerome Williams of the San Francisco Giants. Many in attendance at Shea thought they would see Barry Bonds at the plate, but they got a record setting performance by the greatest offensive catcher in baseball. Piazza tied the record last week against the Dodgers and has five home runs this season. After the game, Piazza was rightfully proud of his accomplishment:
"It's something I'm very proud of. The only reason it holds a little more significance is because of the physical demands of the position. To do that, to hit that many home runs, number one, you have to be healthy and somewhat consistent. There's been some great catchers that have played this game … and I think that's the reason why I think it's a little more heralded."
Gothamist tips our cap to Mike Piazza, who has accomplished quite a feat. He might not be the best defensive catcher in the game, but there is little doubt that he is an offensive force. The Mets went on to win the game, 8-2 (box score), their 3rd straight. In Oakland, the Yankees won their 8th straight game, defeating the A's, 4-3 (box score). more ›
