Will Eli Have A Happy Homecoming?

The Giants have spent the last three weeks feasting on the dregs of the NFL. Sunday things will get much harder as they head to New Orleans for a battle with the undefeated Saints. The game marks a homecoming for Eli Manning, who grew up in the area, but has never played in the Superdome. It will also be the first meeting between the Giants and their former star, Jeremy Shockey. Shockey has always been an emotional player and you can expect him to be really amped up on Sunday.

2008_07_shockey.jpgNY Giants players Jeremy Shockey has been traded to the New Orleans Saints for 2nd and 5th round draft picks, according to Fox Sports. The tight end has been vocally unhappy this past season, after breaking his leg in a December game against the Redskins (and missing out on the Giants' Super bowl victory), and had complained about coach Tom Coughlin and his teammates. Also, a recent meeting between Shockey and Giants general manager Jerry Reese allegedly became a "shouting match." Fox Sports adds that the deal is subject to league approval and Shockey passing a physical.

It’s time to end this soap opera. No, not the one currently in an extended run at Shea, but the one flaring up this past week at Giants Stadium. Jeremy Shockey is unhappy and pissed off. He is mad he broke his leg, he is mad the team didn’t let him onto the field at the Super Bowl and he is mad about his uncertain future.

The Jets made a big splash in free agency and they hope to make a big splash in the draft. Sitting at number six, the Jets could go in a number of interesting directions. Darren McFadden, the great running back from Arkansas could be the selection, as could Matt Ryan, the QB from Boston College. Ryan is the top-rated QB in the draft. If the Jets don’t select him, the Patriots (picking at 7) could auction their pick off to the highest bidder, so the Jets could also mess up the Patriots plans with a selection of Ryan.

It is hard to imagine a worse night for the Giants than what they actually went through on Sunday. In a 22-10 loss, Eli Manning had 34 incompletions, Jeremy Shockey broke his leg and they forgot how to catch a football. Ugly doesn’t even begin to describe this performance. And yes, the weather was bad with the wind whipping around the stadium, but that affects both teams and Washington didn’t seem to have a problem with the conditions.

It was a tale of two halves at the Meadowlands on Sunday. In the first half, the Giants did everything they could to hand a game to the Jets, in the second half, they woke up and took control of the game.

Wellington Mara used to judge the success of a season based on whether the team was playing a meaningful game the last week of the season. Apparently his son and successor share that belief because Tom Coughlin will be back next year as Giants coach. Coughlin signed a one-year extension today, which could keep him as coach through 2008, but in reality it's just a way to keep him from being a lame duck next year. But he'll certainly be returning as a punching bag for the press.

In keeping with our lists of events from 2006, here are some of the sports stories that Gothamist found compelling in the past year. It ranges from the playoff disappointment from the Mets and the Yankees to the welcome performances of last season's Rangers, this season's Jets and Rutgers.

Is there anyone out there who thinks the Giants will win tomorrow night? After quitting last week against New Orleans? After playing the way they have during the second half of the season? Without a healthy Jeremy Shockey? No, it doesn’t seem that this team has a victory in them and that’s a shame because tomorrow’s game means a lot.

The Giants took advantage of a lot of Carolina mistakes to cruise to a relatively easy 27-13 victory. The Panthers turned the ball over three times, all in the second half and therefore managed only 13 points despite amassing 463 total yards.

If this team is going to be able to survive all of these injuries, Eli Manning is going to have to get a lot better. Manning spent the first half of the Giants’ 26-10 loss in a daze, making bad decisions and overthrowing receivers. He got better in the second half, but it was too late as Jacksonville made the plays they needed to for the win.

Many will point to a ridiculous decision to kick a 52-yard field goal on a wet and windy night and the subsequent 108-yard touchdown as the turning point of this game, but it happened much earlier. Facing a 3rd-and-22 and a dominant New York defense, the Bears got a first down off of a 26-yard running play. Three plays later, the Bears had a touchdown and the game had completely changed.

Football is a game of momentum-swings and the Giants and Cowboys had plenty of those Monday night.

The Giants showed again yesterday that they are capable of a big comeback. Down 14-3, after surrendering a 90-yard run to Warrick Dunn, the defense tightened and the offense went to work and New York emerged with a 27-14 victory.

The Giants have had two weeks to stew over their humiliating loss to Seattle and plenty of time to hear and read about how bad they are. Two weeks to try and come up with a way to stop someone on defense and find their missing pass rush. Yes, this team should be motivated to play well. And two players on defense, Antonio Pierce and LaVar Arrington, both former Redskins, will definitely want to show their old team that they can play.

-Brooklyn 3 Staten Island 0: Jacob Ruckle was dominant going eight innings while allowing only four hits and striking out ten as Brooklyn increased their division lead to two games.

The NFL announced the rosters for the Pro Bowl on Wednesday and six local players made it. Michael Strahan, Osi Umenyiora, Tiki Barber, Jeremy Shockey and David Tyree will represent the Giants while Ty Law will represent the Jets.

If you didn’t watch it, you were lucky, 22 penalties and 12 punts do not make for exciting football, but the Giants did what they had to do and beat the 49rs 24-6 on Sunday. The Giants offense, which was inconsistent all day, finally clicked into gear scoring two touchdowns in the fourth quarter to put the game out of reach. Brandon Jacobs had two one-yard touchdown runs setup by long passes to Amani Toomer and Plaxico Burress who made a fantastic one-handed grab.

Perhaps the Giants offense needed more time off because it didn’t show up until the end of the fourth quarter. Getting the ball back down by seven with 52 seconds left in the game, the Giants scored on two plays to force a fifth quarter of football, but it was all for naught as Dallas took the overtime kickoff and drove for a field goal to win 16-13.

- A 24 year-old mother from The Bronx was shot after leaving a Bronx nightclub. The suspects seem to have been involved in an arguement before the shooting.

Eli Manning is quickly becoming one of the better quarterbacks in the NFC. On Sunday he threw for 296 yards and four touchdowns while leading the Giants to a 44-24 victory over the Rams. The Giants scored on their first six possessions and only had to punt twice in the entire game. For the season, the Giants have scored a NFL high 136 points in four games.

The Giants took advantage of six Saints turnovers to win 27-10 Monday night. New Orleans started the game off by trying a reverse on a kickoff return and fumbling the ball on their own ten-yard line. Three plays later, Brandon Jacobs pounded the ball into the end zone and the Giants had a lead they wouldn’t relinquish.

It must have been some kind of halftime speech. Trailing 13-7 at the half, the Giants came out of the locker room and erupted for 35 points to stomp the Cardinals 42-19 for their biggest opening day victory in 34 years.

This Sunday’s road game against a struggling Redskins (3-8) team could be a good place to start. We are having one of our psychic moments and see Eli Manning throwing for a few touchdowns and having a nice game despite the pressure he will certainly see from Washington’s blitz-happy defense. Call us over optimistic, or even drunk, but we see Eli tearing it up this weekend.

Although Eli Manning looked over anxious in the first half, he settled down to lead the Giants to two scoring drives in the second half, but with a chance at fourth quarter glory, Manning and the Giants came up short and had to settle for a 14-10 loss to the Falcons.

Hopefully the loss to Detroit two weeks ago woke this team up a little bit and the Giants will not look past the Bears or take anything for granted. Although its hard to figure what this Giants team will do week to week, we at Gothamist feel like the Giants will win this one going away and easily cover the nine point spread.

With Amani Toomer injured and unlikely to play, we feel that this is going to be a tough game for Big Blue to take, but we also remember that last season the Giants handed the then 6-0 Vikings their first loss of the season and sacked Culpepper 4 times. With Toomer out, Gothamist favorite Jamaar Taylor will have to make some plays and we feel that he will. The offensive line is also banged up and that terrifies us.

The Giants may not be winning pretty and they're certainly not getting all the headlines, but they're winning all the same and in the N.F.L. wins are what count. After yesterday's 26-10 victory over the Cowboys in Dallas Stadium, the Giants have already matched last season's win total and will go into their bye week with a 4-1 record and a 4-game winning streak.

After being pronounced all but dead after a week one spanking in Philadelphia, the Giants won two games at home and then went out yesterday and defeated the Packers, 14-7,at Lambeau Field. It was New York’s first victory in Green Bay since 1974.

First off, we know the Browns are banged up, with Kellen Winslow and Courtney Brown not playing, but the big story is drumroll please the Giants offense stinks. Seven turnovers should certainly get you more than 20 points, but we know that wasn't the case against the Skins. Now the troops are getting restless. Tight end Jeremy Shockey mouthed off on Wednesday that he feels hes being misused and then yesterday Amani Toomer chimed in that he's unhappy with his role.
