Galen Zamarra was born to doctor parents in Switzerland, who fittingly named him after the ancient Roman physician. As a teenager, Zamarra decided to take up cooking, and now the thoughtful 33 year-old is the chef-owner of Mas (farmhouse) in the West Village. Last month, Mas received an impressive 28 points for food in their listing for the 2009 Zagat Guide, one of only ten area restaurants in the area with such a score. Zamarra will be cooking a dinner at the James Beard House in January, and is involved with Slow Food USA’s ongoing educational programs. He spoke with us a few weeks ago in Mas’ dining room about modern European cooking technique, building a better-tasting baby food, and organizing a human shield to protect J-Lo.

Jennifer Lopez is bringing her 2002 big screen rom-com, Maid in Manhattan, back to life as an hour long dramedy series for ABC. The Hollywood Reporter notes that while Chad Hodge, the writer behind the show, says "The show is a different maid in a different Manhattan," the lead will still be a Latina from the Bronx working in a swank Manhattan hotel, just trying to make it in this crazy, mixed-up world. Sounds the same so far! This is the second go-around for turn the movie into a show--the last was in 2004 but didn't get past development stages. This time, it's said that Bronx native J.Lo "has been very involved, providing 'a fountain of ideas.'" [via NYMag]
Yesterday a group of 8 autistic children graduating from P.S. 37 had a treat in store as Jennifer Lopez stood amongst the audience. The school is in Staten Island's Great Kills neighborhood, and the 10 and 11-year-old kids were performing her song and dance routine for "Let's Get Loud." SI Live reports on the singer's cameo.
The class was first introduced to Lopez's music a few months ago when they had to choose a song to dance to at graduation. Teacher Kathy Amati and paraprofessional Rose Mondella showed the students the "Let's Get Loud" video as a suggestion, and the class of eight boys loved it. They wanted to watch it every day and learned all of the lyrics and dance moves from the video.Continue reading "J.Lo Drops in on Staten Island Graduation"
Not too long ago it was reported that Jennifer Lopez was ready to burst as her belly swelled with twins on the way. She had visited a Long Island hospital with husband Marc Anthony and her couture hospital gowns, but it must have been a false alarm, because soon after she was attending Fashion Week events. Initially it was reported she would have a Cesarean birth that was scheduled for Valentine's Day; no word yet on whether she ended up going the natural way, as yesterday the twins finally arrived.

It's not just venues closing down these days, the latest real estate casualty is still music-related, however. AMNY reports that Sony BMG is closing its Hell's Kitchen studios.
Fifth Avenue was packed with revelers and performers during the 50th Annual Puerto Rican Day Parade. Celebrities, like "King" Ricky Martin, Jennifer Lopez and Marc Anthony, were out in force, as were the politicians, including Mayor Bloomberg, Governor Eliot Spitzer, Senator Charles Schumer, Representative Jose Serrano, and Puerto Rico governor Anibal Acevedo-Villa.
The Puerto Rican Day Parade is supposed to draw 2.8 million spectators to 5th Ave. in Manhattan this Sunday, making it one of the most popular annual parades in New York City. It's the 50th occurrence, so expect lots of enthusiasm from marchers, who will be heading north from 44th St. to 86th St. and entertained by Parade King Ricky Martin.
Anna Wintour, Balenciaga's Nicolas Ghesquière, and Cate Blanchett hosted last night's annual Costume Institute gala, which was a celebration of Paul Poiret, at the Metropolitan Museum of Art. Poirot was the pioneer in modern fashion, and freed women from petticoats and corsets - though many, even those in attendance last night, aren't familiar with him. Everyone did their best to dress "in the spirit of" the King of Fashion however, including: Mick Jagger, David Bowie, Julia Louis-Dreyfus, Kirsten Dunst, Renée Zellweger and many other bold-faced names (photos here).
In the email exchanges he was unwittingly having with FBI agents, McDarrah tried to impress the fictional 13-year-old by name dropping celebrities he'd interviewed, like Rene Zellwegger and Jennifer Lopez.

You know it's the beginning of January when the gyms are filled with New Years resolution exercisers and the movie theaters are filled with post-New Years dreck. Frankly, it's best to focus on getting caught up on last year's best (see our Top 10 and the subsequent comments for suggestions) and leave this week's releases for suckers with movie money to burn.
At the first Latin Grammys held in New York City, Shakira swept the top categories, winning album of the year, best female pop vocal album, song of the year, and record of the year. The Colombian singer dedicated one award to Latin immigrants and said, "I hope soon they will receive they recognition they deserve from the government."
Hundreds of thousands of revelers enjoyed the beautiful weather and celebrated during yesterday's Puerto Rican Day Parade. And this year's theme was, "Boricuas...We count, We Vote!" Though Marc Anthony was the Grand Marshal, the real attraction was his wife, Jennifer Lopez. Mayor Bloomberg, who marched with the couple, said, "In the pictures tomorrow, I will be lucky if I am noticed at all." Anthony and Lopez ultimately needed the help of Guardian Angels to keep the paparazzi off them and keep moving along the parade route. And the couple was also there to promote their upcoming film, El Cantante, but the El Cantante float broke down towards the end of the route.
With the Puerto Rican Day Parade right around the corner, Mayor Bloomberg reminded Fifth Avenue buildings not to board up their properties. Many buildings along the parade's two mile route had taken to putting plywood on doors and windows, fearing rowdy crowds. While Puerto Rican Day parade violence has been a concern since the 2000 "wildings," the NYPD has made sure to step up patrols. Daily News says no buildings have been boarded up so far and that only police sawhorses have been put out, but 1035 Fifth Avenue told the Post they would put up a metal fence again, since people have climbed onto a window ledge in years past (last year, some buildings put panels and fences up) .

So, Boston native Matt Damon got married to his fiance, Miami resident Luciana Bozan, on Friday morning at City Hall - and Mayor Bloomberg was present. Damon and Bozan were able to bypass the Municipal Building wedding. We thought, "Why would Mayor Bloomberg attend the wedding?" Is it because Damon is filming a movie in NYC? Or because Damon is from Boston, the Mayor's original haunt? Or, perhaps, it's a returned favor, after Damon attended one of Bloomberg's "2012 Olympic Committee, pick us!" dinners at his townhouse this summer. Then the Post confirmed that the Olympic connection was why Hizzoner was there. But he didn't perform the marriage - a city clerk did - and the couple was married BEFORE the press corps arrived. Nice work, Bloomberg, to further distance yourself from your press corps - they would have loved a little celebrity.
"Borrow My Crew," hosted by Fonzworth Bentley, rents out entourages-to-the-stars to viewers in need. In the first episode, MTV hires Jennifer Lopez's team to help a girl get ready for senior prom. Bentley, Sean "P. Diddy" Combs and Andre Harrell execexec produce.Oh, wait, Power Girls is not Powerpuff Girls. Our mistake. We guess we'll be seeing car crashes, legal proceedings, and lots of straightened blond hair in Power Girls. But Borrow My Crew seems like it'll be hosted by Bentley, umbrella holder turned men's accessories entrepreneur, which means you had Gothamist at the Real World, MTV.
- An unnamed Spence School senior, "You sort of want to feel pampered because it's the last big bang of your high-school career. To me it's not about romance or losing your virginity, it's about sharing an evening of fun with my friends."
Big Boi added: "We love you, yeah. And don't forget to tell your parents to get out and vote." Gothamist loves musicians with a message who also sign a song about man-whores and big guls needing love to kids.

Watch Jennifer Lopez at the Golden Globes this Sunday in her first post-Bennifer appearance. And somewhere, Matt Damon and Eva Mendes are glad to be the beta couple in that circle of celebrities. And somewhere else, Kevin Smith gets a phone call from Harvey Weinstein about the fate of Jersey Girl (straight to video or is it saved?).
CZJ talking about "eating your way to oblivion?" (See it here.) Gothamist isn't going near that one. We will, however, bring up "to zeta-jones," the memorable catch all (literally) created by Elizabeth Spiers during her Gawker reign.

Madonna says that Jennifer Lopez is trying too hard to get media attention and that's what doomed her relationship with Ben Affleck. "Ultimately, if you’ve a strong relationship — and there’s understanding of what a committed marriage is — I don’t think that having a lot of media attention can break it up. To a certain extent, they courted the media attention. At the end of the day I feel like that’s their job, and then there needs to be a part of the relationship that you keep private." Hello, Truth or Dare. Hello, Sex. Does the Kabbalah also incude memory loss? She adds, "You know, I’m not making a judgment call on Jennifer and Ben. We can only make assumptions about why it did or didn’t happen.” Thank God for assuming!
