Earlier this year we took a look at Jason Polan's ambitious effort to draw every person in NYC. Well, starting today you can put yourself in front of his pencil and pad and help out his project, but more importantly 826NYC. Polan and fellow artist Jane Mount are teaming up with Jen Bekman and her 20x200 site for Thrilla in Manila; the event is a three-day draw-a-thon where the public is invited to draw, be drawn or learn how to draw. Supplies will be provided, and next Monday the portraits will be for sale at the gallery (on Tuesday they'll go up for grabs online).

ART: We've been loving the Love=Love show at Jen Bekman Gallery, which just opened earlier this week. The exhibition by Kent Rogowski is comprised of six large-scale photographic prints based on altered puzzles, as well as a selection of the original objects. Think of a puzzle collision resulting in collage art; also: see pictured.
In 2006 Brooklyn photographer Noah Kalina had a lot of eyes on him. After posting a video online containing a photograph of himself taken each day for six years, he went down in viral video history. That video, called "everyday," was scored to original music by his ex-girlfriend Carly Comando, and both have the world's attention again after The Simpsons parodied it a couple of weeks ago. If you are one of the few who haven't seen the original, you can do so here. This Friday marks the 8th year he'll be taking a photograph of himself every day! And today Jen Bekman is offering one of Kalina's prints for sale through her 20x200 website.
EVENT: We're sponsoring, and our publisher is hosting, the NYC Photobloggers event tonight. Come over to the Apple Store to see a dazzling display of digital images and the faces behind the photos: Eliot Shepard, Jay Parkinson (yes, that Jay Parkinson) and a whole lot more will be on hand. There will also be a special presentation by Jen Bekman of 20x200, Hey Hot Shot, and the Jen Bekman Gallery and an after party at Merc Bar.

Local favorite Jen Bekman is back with her seasonal Hey Hot Shot show. As in the past, the competition showcases work by unknown photographers-- many from right here in the five boroughs. Check out this gallery with a whole bunch of pictures by the winners-- some favorites include this girl in a bathing suit, this dude's huge package, and these sad pooches. If you want to see the pictures in person, the opening for the show in on March 15th. [Related: Eliot was one of the judges at the show, and he has an interesting statement about what makes a good picture-- "Moody (nude) self-portraiture" is not preferred!]
If you are looking for something to do before tonight's Movable Hype (8pm, Knitting Factory), you should swing by the opening of the autumn edition of Hey Hot Shot, the great photography series at Jen Bekman's Gallery (6pm, 6 Spring Street.) One of our favorite NYC photobloggers, Joe Holmes, has some beatiful pictures in the show-- silhouettes taken at the American Natural History Musuem.
Friday the 13th stopped being scary for us when we were younger, rebellious and declaring things like "13, in fact, is our lucky number". We embraced the superstition and turned it in to our lucky day. Or, as it turns out, just another day. Anyway, we were hoping that some theater in this city would be showing Friday the 13th: Jason Takes Manhattan, but no such...luck. You'll have to deal with these other non-scary events:
Extra special reminder: don't miss tonight's Gothamist-Six Apart happy hour at Sweet and Vicious (5 Spring Street, off Bowery), beginning around 7pm. It's right across the street from the opening of Eliot Shepard's show at Jen Bekman's gallery- that starts at 6pm, so you might want to go there first. Our happy hour will feature free drinks (hint: until the money runs out!) and extra special giveaways and surprise guests. Afterwards, some of us are going to go look at the elephants arriving in Manhattan- hilarity is sure to ensue.
Starting tomorrow and on view through November 13 Tema Stauffer's American Stills at Jen Bekman Gallery and at the PUBLIC Avro|KO project space [@ 210 Elizabeth St].
Still unwinding from the RNC madness that hit our streets last week? We suggest ducking into our favorite gallery. Tomorrow night Jen Bekman Gallery is welcoming Agnes Barleys' solo debut of her works on paper to the walls of New York.
Did you miss the Pin-Up show back in February at Jen Bekman Gallery?
If you like photography or photoblogging, check out the Pinup Redux Show opening at Jen Bekman's gallery tonight. Prominent photobloggers Eliot Shepard, Laura Holder, and our very own Jake Dobkin have each put in a few pictures. If you are a collector, prices are $600 and under, and 10% of the proceeds go to Teachers Count.

Jen Bekman, Gallery Owner
Tonight, go to the opening of the Pin-Up Show at the Jen Bekman gallery at 6 Spring Street between Elizabeth and Bowery. Some of our favorite photobloggers (slower, laura holder) as well as other photographers have works exhibited. Even our own little Jake has some photographs in the show. The show runs until Sunday, February 22nd, and all the pieces are priced under $500, which should make it easier for burgeoning patrons of the arts to add to their collections.
