Last Night's Action: Devils Hit the Links

Last Night's Action: Devils Hit the Links

  • Mets 6, Diamondbacks 2: With this start, Jorge Sosa told the Mets, "Yeah, I should have gotten the callup Monday." That's when the Mets turned to Chan Ho Park, who was on a better schedule in the minor leagues than Sosa. Shawn Green haunted one of his former teams by hitting a two-run homer and then knocking in a run during a four-run sixth inning.

Another Slip-up Pushes Mets to Brink

Another Slip-up Pushes Mets to Brink

All those wins during that memorable cruise-control summer mean nothing now. The Mets can become the latest regular-season juggernaut to fall in the postseason with only one more defeat. After a disheartening 4-2 loss to St. Louis on Tuesday in which they couldn't solve Jeff Weaver or the Cardinals bullpen, the Mets head home needing both games to win the series. To make matters worse, their Game 6 starter is the sometimes-shaky John Maine, and their Game 7 pitcher is To Be Determined. more ›

Rain Comes Back Another Day at NLCS

Rain Comes Back Another Day at NLCS

Mother Nature didn't agree with the scheduled off-days in this year's National League Championship Series. Monday's rainout was the second of the series, and the Mets will stay in St. Louis to play Game 5 against the Cardinals today instead of being back in New York. The more recent postponement removes the imbalance the first created -- the starting pitchers will be working on normal rest instead of three days' worth. Early speculation that Chris Carpenter would be moved up to start today's game was ruled out by Tony La Russa. more ›

Mets' Outburst Helps Them Avoid Precipice

Mets' Outburst Helps Them Avoid Precipice

Given the pitching matchup entering Game 4 of the National League Championship Series, Sunday's high-scoring affair should come as no surprise. With a slugfest win over the Cardinals, the Mets tied the series at two games apiece before Monday's Game 5. They can thank Carlos Delgado, who hit a three-run homer in the fifth to snap a 2-2 tie before adding two-run double during a six-run sixth inning. more ›

Worth the wait: Mets take Game 1

Worth the wait: Mets take Game 1

After the Mets' Tom Glavine and the Cardinals' Jeff Weaver exchanged shutout innings Thursday, few were surprised by who blinked first. Weaver did when he allowed a two-run homer by Carlos Beltran in the sixth. The shot broke a scoreless tie and helped the Mets to a Game 1 win. With their only reliable starter going, the Mets surely wanted this game. Series are not won or lost in the first game, but with St. Louis ace Chris Carpenter looming before Friday's game, New York is pleased to have this one in the bag. more ›

One step away from the World Series: Previewing the NLCS

One step away from the World Series: Previewing the NLCS

After making quick work of the Dodgers in the division series, the Mets start a four-of-seven series against the Cardinals tonight. As they stand four wins away from the World Series, the Mets look across at a team that -- like the Dodgers -- could be vulnerable on the mound, especially in the bullpen. The Cardinals have been inconsistent all year, and their pitching has been a big reason why. more ›

Yanks Look to End Three Game Losing Streak

Yanks Look to End Three Game Losing Streak

In Tuesday's game, Javier Vasquez took the mound against Brad Radke. Vasquez once again disappointed. He must be the most disappointing 13 game winner in the history of baseball. Gothamist can't remember ever watching him pitch a game and thinking to ourselves that he was unhittable. He racks up cheap wins and has an E.R.A of over 4 runs. When he was in Montreal, he once one of baseball's best kept secrets. Now in the Bronx, he can't seem to get it together. Now don't get us wrong, if there are two foxholes and Jeff Weaver is manning one and Vasquez the other, Gothamist is diving in with Vasquez. Vasquez, though has done little to impress Yankee fans. more ›

    Orlando Goes to 5-0

    Orlando Goes to 5-0

Orlando Hernandez looks flat-out amazing these days. He may be the best pitcher on the Yankees pitching staff and right now is the only one that you can count on for a solid start. Last night Hernandez took his record to 5-0 with a 5-1 win over the hard-hitting Texas Rangers. more ›

Yanks Still Best in Baseball, but Drop Two to LA

Yanks Still Best in Baseball, but Drop Two to LA

The Yanks ended up dropping two of three in their weekend series with the Dodgers. Javier Vasquez lost the series opener 6-3 (box score) to former Yankee Jeff Weaver. After Weaver gave up three runs in the first inning, he settled down and held the Yankees scoreless for the next five innings. Eric Gagne came in to nail down the victory in the 9th. more ›

Justin: Yeah, I think Torre might have been thinking the same thing. There's no other explaination for putting Weaver in. more ›
