The Observer people watches the people watchers this week with a piece on The Bench. Almost too ridiculous to report on, the Lower East Side American Apparel happens to have a hot spot outside of its windows which has become the "epicenter of perhaps the hottest 'anti-scene' scene on Saturday nights." Exactly the kind of thing you'd expect to be forged outside of an American Apparel, it even has founders - including DJ Big Black Matt Goias, and a MySpace profile.

If you watch the reality shows, you probably wonder at the random, more boring, points of your day: Whatever happened to so-and-so from Project whatchamacallit? Or more likely, you don't.

Thank you, Project Runway producers, for all the Michael in tonight's episode! Next time, we hope to see him doing more designing and not just styling or talking down crazy women from ledges.

Okay, maybe not all of Jay McCarroll's friends are from Bravo shows (his friend Selene in Park Slope is like the bestest friend ever - she lets him stay on her couch, touch her boob, and models his outfit for pregnant Heidi), it just seemed like it. Hey, here's Austin Scarlett! Wendy Pepper! Oh, Kara is the only person he knows in L.A. with a sewing machine (okay, that's more legit). But Jason from Blow Out cuts his hair? What next, James Lipton comes on to lecture Jay about drama? Just a thought! So, Gothamist watched Project Jay two nights ago and actually watched part of it again last night, and we'll probably watch it every single time it comes on Bravo because we tend to do things like that (it's that or watching the Pastry World Championships on the Food Network). We're a little torn between wishing it was a weekly show and being happy it isn't. God bless Jay's wackiness, but he's a bit high-maintenance. Anyway, here's our rundown:

No one needed any more reasons to watch Project Jay, the one hour special about the season one winner of Project Runway, Jay McCarroll, but after reading Virginia Heffernan's assessment in the Times, we Can. Not. Wait. Saying that if he were better-looking, he'd be stupid and die of AIDS? His disdainful family and Heidi Klum's pregnancy-induced indecisiveness? Just living in Park Slope? And that hat is so great. Oh, Jay, we miss you from this season. The best two hours of TV tonight is from 10PM-midnight on Bravo - Project Runway reunion followed by Project Jay.

Wednesday is now most definitely the new Must See TV night. Not only is there Law & Order, Lost, and CSI: NY on the big networks, there's America's Next Top Model, Veronica Mars, and now Project Runway on Bravo. It is the only night of the week that requires a seriously souped up TiVo set-up, but luckily the UPN and Bravo replay their shows. Project Runway's new season starts with two hours of annoying new reality show contestants, bad ideas of what fashion should be, some bitchery from Nina Garcia and Michael Kors (we hope! we pray!) and waiting for an Auf Wiedersehen from Heidi Klum. Gothamist cannot wait - there is even another Kara in the mix. But most importantly, it brings us more Tim Gunn. And if you're at home now, you could be watching a Project Runway Season 1 marathon right now, up through a 6PM showing of the finale!

Aspiring designers wanting to join the hothouse of craft and craziness known as Project Runway, the NY casting call (for a chance to appear on the second season) is on April 25, 26 and 27, 8AM and 6PM. Judging designers' portfolios and samples will be season one contestants and Tim Gunn! Gothamist can't wait to see what happens next; we're confident the producers will ensure there will more love-to-hate characters.

And then...

Jay's runway collection was an explosion of color - a little overwhelming, but still, a lot of great, interesting pieces (the detailing on this sweater is sweet, and the final dress was great). Kara's collection was sexy and beautifully put together, but, as Michael Kors said, it was too Gucci (and if Gothamist can see that, then there are problems). Wendy's collection was all right - skillfully tailored, but pretty ugly. Gothamist does applaud Bravo's chutzpah for making sure Wendy's wispy-voiced daughter pulled our heartstrings, though. As for Kara's and Wendy's futures, we can only imagine they will have more success: Kara because she's skilled and Wendy because she's a character.
