- Red Sox 9, Mets 4: The Mets had their chances against Jon Lester, loading the bases twice, but the rookie pitcher got out of the jams and the Red Sox won their 10th straight game. Alay Soler had his worst outing of the season, aided by a Lastings Milledge misplay of a fly ball into a two-run double in the fourth inning. The biggest scare for the Mets wasn't Big Papi or Manny Ramirez, but Jose Reyes bouncing off Jason Varitek's leg in the 5th inning. Luckily for the Mets, Reyes escaped without major injury. Tonight, Pedro Martinez returns to the mound in his first game against his former team.

-Mets 4 Dodgers 1: Alay Soler pitched seven innings of one run ball to get his first career victory after three starts. Jose Reyes started the game off with a home run and Carlos Delgado added his own two-run homer. It's nice to see the Mets game decided by more than one run.

In a stunner, the United States actually lost a game in pool play during the World Baseball Classic. Yesterday, they lost to their friendly neighbors to the north, 8-6. If you're thinking to yourselves, "Canada? Who the hell do they have?" Gothamist can say that we're right there with you. The "big" names on Team Canada include: Erik Bedard, Paul Quantrill, Chris Reitsma, Corey Koskie, Jason Bay, and Matt Stairs. Canada all but conceded the game when they shuffled their starting rotation, so the win is even bigger a shock. But with the WBC essentially an extremely competitive Spring Training, anything can happen.

Spring is almost here! Pitchers and catchers started reporting to camps in Florida today. In Port St. Lucie the Mets are welcoming new faces Billy Wagner, Carlos Delgado and Paul Lo Duca, as well as several others. In Tampa, the Yankees have several new pitchers, Kyle Farnsworth, Octavio Dotel, Mike Myers and Ron Villone joining their staff.

As for the game, Randy Johnson was once again shaky. While he struck out nine batters, he gave up three home runs and could not protect a one-run lead after the Yankees came back from a 4-1 deficit. Johnson is probably still rounding into form, but Yankee fans’ are beginning to get impatient with their sixteen million dollar man.

So much for going to bed early. Sixteen hours after the end of their last game, the Yankees and Red Sox met up again for game 5 of the AL Championship Series and for the second night in a row, it went to extra innings. Last night, however, the game ran into the 14th inning and was the longest game time-wise in postseason baseball history at 5 hours 49 minutes.

Ponson was the story of the night. After the first two innings, Ponson retired 16 straight batters. Matsui broke the streak with a single in the 8th inning. The Yankees could only muster 4 hits off of Ponson as he pitched a complete game. Jose Contreras on the other hand was doomed by one bad inning. He was pitching on three days' rest.

The Boston Red Sox took advantage of their mastery of Yankee pitcher Jose Contreras last night for a 9-6 win in legendary Fenway Park. The victory gave the Sox a 2-1 series win but still left them 7.5 games behind the Yankees in the standings.
