Last Night's Action: Swept Away

Last Night's Action: Swept Away

Over the first few innings, it seemed like the Mets would have a chance to break their losing streak, but the late innings proved to be their undoing and they fell to Washington 10-1. Chris Schwinden pitched five effective innings allowing only two runs (one earned). The Mets cut the deficit to 2-1 when Jason Bay doubled in David Wright, but the bullpen caved in from there. New York surrendered a single run in the 7th, three in the 8th and four in the 9th and the losing streak now stands at six. more ›

Last Night's Action: Mets Defeat Mo In The 10th

The Yankees may have won the subway series by winning on Friday and Saturday, but the Mets managed a 3-2 10-winning victory to avoid the sweep. Ronny Paulino managed to tie the game in the ninth off Mariano Rivera, and then in the tenth, Jason Bay hit a singe that sent Scott Hairston home. Bay said, "I'm not trying to make it monumental or anything, but just the way I've struggled, to come through in an unbelievable game, it definitely means a lot." more ›

Mets Offer Contracts To Jason Bay, Bengie Molina

Like a monster awaking from slumber, the Mets finally threw their hats into the free agency market yesterday, offering contracts to OF Jason Bay and C Bengie Molina. The Mets organization seemed groggy earlier this off-season; GM Omar Minaya told one reporter “I don’t feel like I have to do something,” seemingly forgetting that the Mets went 70-92 with the second-highest payroll in baseball. more ›

Last Night's Action: The Locals Lose

Last Night's Action: The Locals Lose

-Pirates 11 Mets 1: This one was just embarrassing. Sure, the Mets were forced to start John Maine because Pedro’s hip is bothering him (uh-oh), but Pittsburgh is the worst team in the National League and New York is the best. On Monday it looked like the roles had been reversed as every Pirate position player had a hit and Jason Bay drove in three runs. more ›

D'Oh Canada!

D'Oh Canada!

In a stunner, the United States actually lost a game in pool play during the World Baseball Classic. Yesterday, they lost to their friendly neighbors to the north, 8-6. If you're thinking to yourselves, "Canada? Who the hell do they have?" Gothamist can say that we're right there with you. The "big" names on Team Canada include: Erik Bedard, Paul Quantrill, Chris Reitsma, Corey Koskie, Jason Bay, and Matt Stairs. Canada all but conceded the game when they shuffled their starting rotation, so the win is even bigger a shock. But with the WBC essentially an extremely competitive Spring Training, anything can happen. more ›
