Michael Moore on Maddow: Why Are We So Violent?

It was Bowling for Columbine revisited on The Rachel Maddow Show last night. Maddow has been covering the increased debate on gun control in the wake of the Tuscon massacre, and her guest was activist filmmaker Michael Moore, who asked the same difficult question that perplexed him in his smash hit 2002 documentary (which won an Academy Award): Why are Americans so trigger happy? The interview began with that stunning segment from Moore's film wherein K-Mart reps meet with two Columbine High massacre victims, whose presence persuades the company to stop selling handgun ammunition. more ›

Video: Jared Lee Loughner's Creepy "Genocide School"

Among the many unnerving details that emerged this week about Arizona gunman Jared Lee Loughner, who is accused of killing six and wounding 14 others last weekend during an apparent assassination attempt on Rep. Gawker found the video, in which Loughner bitterly narrates a trip around his college campus. At one point, he says, "This is the school that I go to. This is my genocide school, where I'm going to be homeless because of this school. I haven't forgot the teacher that gave me the B for freedom of speech." You can see the video below. more ›

Funeral Held For 9-Year-Old Victim Of Tucson Shooting

Yesterday, hundreds of mourners gathered in Arizona for the funeral of 9-year-old Christina Taylor Green, one of the victims killed in last weekend's tragic shooting in Tucson. A U.S. flag recovered from Ground Zero was hung up outside the church as part of the ceremony, the first funeral for one of the six people killed during the attack by suspect Jared Lee Loughner. Green, the granddaughter of former Mets and Yankees manager Dallas Green, was born on Sept. 11, 2001, and was one of fifty 9/11 babies featured in a book called "Faces of Hope." "I know you'd be very proud to have the 9/11 flag here today. Christina, this is a terrible tragedy for all of us, and you know that too well, because you were born on 9/11, and I think you've affected the whole country," said her father, John Green. more ›

Tucson Tea Party Co-Founder Says Tea Party Is Victim Too

Sarah Palin and the Tea Party have received a lot of criticism in the wake of last weekend's tragic shooting in Tucson, Arizona, prompting Palin to defend herself in a video yesterday, using the antiquated claim of "blood libel." Now, Tucson Tea Party co-founder Trent Humphries has gone one step further, calling the Tea Party victims of the shooting, and arguing that Rep. Gabrielle Giffords is partially responsible for having a lack of security. Regarding Palin's controversial gun-target map, he told the Guardian UK: "It's political gamesmanship. The real case is that she [Giffords] had no security whatsoever at this event. So if she lived under a constant fear of being targeted, if she lived under this constant fear of this rhetoric and hatred that was seething, why would she attend an event in full view of the public with no security whatsoever?" more ›

But know this: the hopes of a nation are here tonight. We mourn with you for the fallen," and also referred to the debate, "It's important for us to pause for a moment and make sure that we are talking with each other in a way that heals, not a way that wounds... If this tragedy prompts reflection and debate, as it should, let's make sure it's worthy of those we have lost. Let's make sure it's not on the usual plane of politics and point scoring and pettiness that drifts away with the next news cycle." (Full text here, video below.) more ›

Arizona Shooter To Get Unabomber's Lawyer

Arizona Shooter To Get Unabomber's Lawyer

Looks like Jared Lee Loughner, the shooter in this weekend's horror in Tucson, has got himself a lawyer: The Federal Public Defender's Office has recommended Judy Clarke to work the case. Clarke, no stranger to such high-profile defense work, previously helped defend Timothy McVeigh, the Unabomber, 9/11 conspirator Zacarias Moussaoui and Susan Smith, the S.C. mom who drowned her two sons in 1994. So, if her track record is any indication, Loughner will get a good defense—but isn't going to get off. And, considering the note Loughner reportedly left in a safe ("I planned ahead"), that sounds about right. more ›

But every day that goes by and we don't see an increase, we're slightly more optimistic." more ›
