It's been a while since we heard anything about the Jane Hotel, whose ballroom was shut down in October after numerous noise complaints were filed by locals (who also became a press force to be reckoned with, armed with a blog and Twitter). But today their worst nightmare may be coming true: the Jane's ballroom is reopening! Dun dun dun.
The Jane Hotel's Ballroom Set To Reopen
Café Gitane at The Jane Hotel Open for Dinner
In November, Soho's popular French-Moroccan mainstay Cafe Gitane opened up a new location in the controversial Jane Hotel. Things started out slowly with breakfast and lunch, but now the cheery cafe is open for dinner, starting tonight. The West Village outpost, which boasts lovely views of the Hudson River, is serving many of the favorites from the original Mott Street location, such as the appetizing Smoked Trout Salad with black lentils, walnuts, arugula, dried cranberries, avocado, goat cheese, cherry tomatoes, shallots and vinaigrette ($14).
Jane Hotel Guest Confronted By the Dead
The Jane Hotel can't seem to keep anyone happy! The neighbors have already led a crusade to get their club shut down, and now a recent paying customer at the hotel has quite a story about his stay there—which he tells on his blog, in a post titled I Smell Dead People.
The Jane Goes From Ballroom To Courtroom
When the Jane Hotel first entered the neighborhood, Community Board members say they were enthusiastic about the ballroom, having "visions of people reading from their new works in an elegant salon." While the March sisters may have found parlor readings of contemporary literature a satiating social experience, the Olsen twins represent the Jane's real clientele, and we're guessing they don't read much Murakami whilst making their late night rounds.
Jane Nightmare Moves to West Street, For Now
While the Jane Hotel undergoes some "minor physical adjustments" after their loving neighbors had them temporarily shut down, Eater reports that other local establishments are picking up the slack. Here's a list of where to go in the neighborhood til the Jane reopens, but the Rusty Knot is actually hosting the hotel until further notice.
After Neighbor's Crusade, Jane Temporarily Closes Ballroom
The Jane Street Hotel may be oh so pretty, but it has spurred an ugly battle on the street. Yes, after a full-on, balls-out attack on the hotel, the residents of the street have allegedly won... for now. We're told by a tipster that: "The Jane Street Hotel is now closed until November due to the violations and they have a sign on the door that its because of internal issues." This comes after the hotel was "raided" over the weekend.
Jane Street Residents Drag Dogs Into Their Fight
The Jane Street NIMBYs have been pulling out all the stops lately, and their latest stunt brings them offline. Yes, this sign is suggesting dog owners walk their dog right over to The Jane and encourage them to pee on it. To be exact, it says: "Let's face it, every dog needs to do his thing. But when doing it, why not also let him show The Jane Hotel exactly what he thinks about them running an illegal club in a quiet residential neighborhood?"
Jane Hotel Gets Raided!
The nightmare on Jane Street continues, though it still remains uncertain if the real nightmare is the Jane Hotel, or the wealthy NIMBYs who are unleashing every city agency upon their new neighbor.
Battle For Jane Street Continues
The saga on Jane Street continues, as neighbors unite against the Jane Hotel's nightlife crowd. Andrea Peyser pens a piece about the battle, pitting children with asthma ("every night, choking smoke fills the family's living space") against bold-faced party-goers like the Kate Winslet and Edward Norton. Yep, the modern-day Tiny Tim lives in a multi-million dollar Manhattan home with a backyard!
Jane Hotel Just Won't Shut Up
Yesterday Curbed quietly pointed out that the West Village residents were rallying against the Jane Hotel, particularly the establishment's plan for a rooftop bar. Rumor has it neighbors were promised entrance to the place if they would just STFU, but since late last month they've been airing their complaints on a blog called Nightmare on Jane Street.
Jane Hotel Opens Lobby Bar
We've seen glimpses of the Jane Hotel before, but now the West Village establishment has opened their lobby bar. Owners Sean MacPhearson (Bowery/Maritime Hotels) and Eric Goode say the style is understated; "Since our rooms are compact, the bar will feel like a living room for our guests, a place where they can just hang out. If you ever see a velvet rope, it’ll probably be hanging from the ceiling.” Consisting of three rooms—a front bar, a ballroom lounge and an upstairs mezzanine—the space will be open to hotel guests as well as friends and visitors. And thirsty artists take note: "The Jane lobby bar will also revive the revered New York tradition of bartering drinks for art from its patrons."
Protest Outside Waverly Inn Spotlights Alleged "Slumlords"
Permanent residents of the The Jane Hotel in the West Village say conditions at the shabby-chic reinvention of the old Hotel Riverview are so horrid that they've no choice but to picket outside the landlords' other establishments, which include celebrity favorite The Waverly Inn. On Wednesday night they made quite a scene outside the restaurant, and apparently won the sympathy of Hugh Jackman. The Post reports that as they chanted "Slumlords!" and "Rats!" outside, Jackman approached them to talk. Looking at photos depicting the dilapidated conditions at The Jane, he reportedly gasped, "Oh, my God." Diane von Furstenberg also showed some pity, asking, "Who are the slumlords?" That would be Eric Goode and Sean McPherson, who also run the Bowery Hotel, where the group protested last night over what publicist Ronn Torossian, their representative, calls "appalling conditions. Rats run [around] daily, asbestos lingers and 99 complaints have been filed in recent months with city housing authorities."
