Five Years Later, McGreevey "Grateful For My Brokenness"

Five years ago yesterday, NJ Governor James McGreevey resigned, saying he was "a gay American" and admitting an affair with male aide (though many believe he stepped down due to a corruption scandal that ensnared his top contributors). Yesterday, the Star-Ledger published an interview with McGreevey—he said, "I'm grateful for my brokenness. I'm grateful for my humility." He is now a student at the General Theological Seminary, on track to get his Masters of Divinity next year (though he's not sure if he'll become a priest) and also volunteers at a Harlem storefront, helping with a prisoner re-entry program. McGreevey lives in NJ with his partner Mark O'Donnell and said they hadn't entered a civil union, "Civil union is less than marriage. Marriage is a sacred and valued institution and ought to be afforded equal protection. We've committed to each other and I believe our relationship is blessed and for now that works." And when asked what the opening line of his obituary should be, he said, "'Jim McGreevey, a joyful flawed Christian, died yesterday.' That would be the most accurate. And maybe the most meaningful."

Love Gov Club: McGreevey Discusses Sanford's Admission

If you're going to discuss South Carolina Governor Mark Sanford's South American wanderings to his married girlfriend, why not enlist the expert insight of another governor whose reign ended when he admitted to an affair with a man—and that he was a "Gay American"? The Today Show snagged former NJ governor James McGreevey to comment about Sanford's mess—clearly, Eliot Spitzer passed.

The Star-Ledger reports that Dina Matos has dropped her claim that her former husband--and former NJ Governor--James McGreevey committed fraud because he did not tell her he was gay when they got married. McGreevey famously resigned office in 2004, and recently their history was fodder for a public divorce trial with claims of poverty and reports of threesomes. McGreevey's lawyer said the fraud charge was a failed "attempt to secure more money from JIm." Matos, who did not receive any alimony (just child support), said her ex was disclosing too much information to the press in violation of judge's orders.

After an acrimonious divorce trial, a judge ruled that former NJ governor James McGreevey does not need to pay his ex-wife Dina Matos any alimony. When McGreevey's lawyer got the news, the Star-Ledger reports Stephen Haller yelled, "No alimony-that's what I'm talking about!" Stiil, McGreevey, who claimed he was so broke that his fiancier-boyfriend had to loan him money, must pay child support, up to $1,075/month (less than Matos's requested $1,750/month) and give a $109,295 payout (less than Matos's requested $1 million).

Former NJ governor James McGreevey was on the witness stand during his drawn-out divorce trial and said he relies on his boyfriend, a wealthy financier, to help him pay alimony to his first ex-wife as well as his currently estranged wife, Dina Matos McGreevey.

Former NJ Governor James McGreevey confirmed that he, his now ex-wife and a former aide had threesomes together. McGreevey sent an e-mail to the Associated Press, "This happened, this happened in the past, and now we need to move on with our lives."

The NY Post has an "explosive interview" with disgraced former NJ Governor James McGreevey's old driver and aide, who claims he had many "three-way sex romps" with McGreevey and his wife Dina Matos. Teddy Pederson is speaking out because Matos has been talking about Governor Spitzer's scandal, "It's frustrating to hear her call Gov. Spitzer a hypocrite while she's out there being as dishonest as anyone could be about her own life... She's framed herself as a victim - yet she was a willing participant, she had complete control over what happened in her relationship."

Last year, in the middle of his woes with the State GOP (right before Troopergate exploded), Governor Eliot Spitzer revealed his wife said to him, "What was wrong with going into the family business? That wouldn’t have been so bad." Now, people are probably wondering the same thing, as her husband apologized (sort of) for using a prostitute the night before Valentine's Day.

With rumors buzzing that Governor Spitzer will resign in light of his involvement with a prostitution ring, the residents of New York could very well join the residents of Connecticut and New Jersey in the "My Governor Resigned Due to Scandal Club."

A week and a half ago, former NJ Governor James McGreevey and his ex-wife Dina Matos McGreevey were fighting over a birthday party McGreevey and his partner were planning for 6-year-old daughter Jacqueline, another public spat in their contentious divorce. In spite of a judge's repeated requests for the McGreeveys to settle their differences for the sake of their daughter, we know a lot about their squabbling. The Post runs down the greatest hits. Matos...

Dina Matos McGreevey appeared on Oprah today as part of the publicity tour for her book, Silent Partner: A Memoir of My Marriage, about her marriage to former NJ governor James McGreevey. Of course, the estranged couple have exchanged angry accusations (McGreevey said his estranged wife was using their 5-year-old daughter for publicity while she fired back about portraits of naked men in his home) to the point where a judge had to tell both McGreeveys to put aside their bitter differences for the sake of their child.

Yesterday, former NJ governor James McGreevey and his ex-wife Dina Matos McGreevey met in family court to hash out details of their bitter divorce. The McGreeveys accused each other of being unfit guardians for their 5-year-old daughter Jacqueline, and Family Court judge Karen Cassidy basically shamed them in court yesterday. She told them to use "common sense" and not expose the child to "non-age-appropriate activities."

I know this is a little bit vague. But it's obviously a fluid situation, and I ask that you act in the best interest of your child in mind...

Why did you decide to write about your formative years in New Jersey? Are you trying to provide inspiration to other young New Jerseyans? Or did NJ inspire you so much that you had to pay it forward? Wait, maybe that's the same thing. The decision to write about my formative years wasn't really anything calculated. I had been writing these short essays about growing up for a long time, mostly because I thought the stuff that happened was so funny - in a 'you can't make this shit up' kind of way. I never really thought to connect them, though I did think maybe there was a movie in there. But whenever I would tell people about my family - in a casual kind of way - they were always amazed, or fascinated, or frightened. So one day I thought that if I could find an emotional connecting tissue to hang the stories on, I'd have a book.

An SUV carrying New Jersey Governor Jon Corzine crashed on the Garden State Parkway in Galloway Township. After undergoing extensive surgery, Corzine has a broken leg, twelve broken ribs, a broken collarbone, and a broken breastbone; he also has numerous facial lacerations. He is in stable condition and remains in the ICU, but faces many months of rehabilitation. State Senate President Richard Codey, who took over for NJ Governor James McGreevey when he stepped down, will be acting governor indefinitely.

Yesterday, ACT UP members and others protested in Times Square to denounce the U.S. military, with particular focus on Chairman of the Joints Chiefs of Staffs General Pace's remarks about homosexuality being immoral. Andres Duque at Blabbleando has a great post on the protest as well some some nice photographs - check out activist Larry Kramer stirring things up again! Also see Towleroad's coverage.

We can't figure this out! Apparently former NJ Governor James McGreevey wants custody of daughter Jacqueline AND child support from ex-wife Dina Matos. The last time we checked, McGreevey was living in a 17-room mansion with his boyfriend Mark O'Donnell, a financier. And he wrote a book that could pay some of the bills, we think.

McGreevey's back for good in Trenton, but, to the relief of NJ residents, it's just in a oil-on-canvas portrait. Former Governor James McGreevey, along with his partner Mark O'Donnell, parents, Governor Jon Corzine and one other former and current staffers, attended the unannounced and very brief unveiling yesterday morning. Pointedly not present: His ex-wife Dina or his two children.

We were flipping through the NY Post this morning, and of course the headline "MCG FINDS HIS INNER KERMIT" jumped out at us. What? Is he going to be on Sesame Street? No, it's better: Apparently former governor James McGreevey "sobbed in therapy while clutching a Kermit the Frog stuffed animal." And what kind of therapy? To battle his addiction to be loved by the public and to "have a public." Well, writing a book and going on tour is certainly a way to feed the addiction! McGreevey went to the same Arizona clinic that Kate Moss and Whitney Houston went to for their drug issues, and that Eric Benet - Halle Berry's cheating ex - went there for his sex addiction.

Just as New York magazine published its big gay excerpt of former NJ governor James McGreevey's book today, Golan Cipel (pictured), the aide who McGreevey claimed to have an affair with while in office, says he never had an affair with McGreevey and that he (Cipel) is not gay. Back in 2004 when McGreevey stepped down, it was rumored that Cipel had been blackmailing McGreevey to keep quiet about the affair. In older interviews, Cipel said that McGreevey had been harrassing him, and in today's Times article, McGreevey apparently tried to get Cipel drunk with Jagermeister.

"I am a gay writer" doesn't quite have the same ring as "I am a gay American," does it? Former New Jersey Governor James McGreevey is writing a "tell-all" autobiography that will hit the bookstores in mid-September. The book, currently titled, "The Confession," will cover all the bases of an autobiography - upbringing, etc. But what most people are looking for, his public revelation that he was gay. First reported in yesterday's Newark Star-Ledger, the book will have details of his sex life and how he kept his homosexuality secret. Less interesting perhaps is that the book will also cover New Jersey politics in depth. Doesn't McGreevey understand that people just want the details of his big secret?

- One reason not to be a panda? Photographs of your deflowering (like that of four-year-old panda Lin Hui, right) may appear on a Reuters feed. They are cute though.

The Star-Ledger has an extensive section on McGreevey, including some investigative reporting on his governorship. And speaking of gays, the NY State Supreme Court ruled that Mayor Bloomberg must carry out a law that he vetoed and the City Council overrode - one that requires businesses the city works with to provide domestic partner benefits.

Check out our interview with Warren St. John, whose new book Rammer Jammer Yellow Hammer makes following the University of Alabama football by RV seem like heaven. Plus the week in full.

Governor James McGreevey announced yesterday that he was stepping down as Governor of the Garden State yesterday in a press conference where he also announced that he was gay. With support from his ex-wife and current wife, McGreevey said he had his feelings since adolescence and that the truth was that he was "a gay American", that he "engaged in an adult consensual affair with another man", and that "given the circumstances surrounding the affair and its likely impact upon my family and my ability to govern, I have decided the right course of action is to resign."

NY Councilman Alan Jennings gets a little bit of a respite as political scandal mongers are LOVING the news that one of NJ Governor James McGreevey's biggest donors hired a prostitute to thwart a witness in the federal case against him. Yes, it's totally confusing, and it doesn't get back to McGreevey, but the fact that real estate developer Charles Kushner, being investigated for tax fraud and illegal campaign contributions, hired a prostitute to seduce a witness and then mailed a tape of the act to the witness's wife is totally insane. In fact, Kushner hired the prostitute to seduce his brother-in-law and accountant, but only the brother-in-law did the deed - his sister's brother! The Post notes that it's "right out of a pulp crime novel," and that's totally spot-on. Gothamist says read up on this and then read some James M. Cain, Dashiell Hammett and Raymond Chandler stat!
