The past few weeks, we've learned a lot about NJ Governor Jon Corzine. He doesn't wear a seatbelt, he wears track suits, and he paid his ex-girlfriend, who happened to be NJ's top union chief, a $6 million settlement after they broke up. Oh, yes: The NY Times has an extensive article about Corzine's relationship with Carla Katz, a union president.

Boxer Mike Tyson was granted a license to fight in New Jersey yesterday, some six years after the state's Athletic Control Board rejected his last application. However, Gov. James E. McGreevey limited the locations where Tyson could have a match by barring him from fighting at any facility owned or operated by the state.

Brooklyn gets two new magazines: One, BKLYN, looks like something perfect for multi-culti yuppies on in Park Slope (okay, maybe that's the idea Gothamist gets from the cover, but wouldn't you?), whereas the other, NRG, seems just right for hip and politically motivated Clinton Hill and Fort Greene residents. According to the Times, the first issues of the magazines include:

The only bright thing to come from the City Hall shooting, and it's only bright because of a tragedy, is the promotion of Police Officer Richard Burt to Detective, after his quick thinking and actions on Wednesday, killing Othniel Askew who had shot Councilman James E. Davis. Mayor Bloomberg praised, "Thankfully, we will never know what would have happened had Officer Burt not been there, been so quick on his feet and been so accurate with his gun," during the swearing in ceremony (pictures). Officer Burt had been 40 feet away, and gun experts tell Newsday that shots with that kind of accuracy, under those circumstances, are very impressive. Detective Burt plans to stay at City Hall.

As an aide tells Newsday, "Security is a joke. It's a well-known fact among City Council workers. I'd hate to say it, but it wouldn't be the hardest thing to get a gun in there . . . Frankly, they put one cop at each metal detector and they have a lot of people going through, and it wouldn't be very hard for somebody to just walk by it."

City Councilman James E. Davis was shot dead at City Hall after an assailant opened fire on the building. Another person was shot and injured. Mayor Bloomberg said, "This is a terrible attack, not just on two people - and they are in our prayers - but this is an attack on democracy.'' Councilman Davis, who was black and a former police officer "joined the police force after being assaulted by two white police officers" according to the Times.
