All along it has been clear that Donnie Walsh is positioning the Knicks for a run at LeBron James after the 2010 season and Friday he made his boldest move towards that goal yet. The Knicks are sending Jamal Crawford to Golden State for Al Harrington. Crawford is the better player, but with a contract that runs through the 2011 season, his contract is a problem. Harrington is currently hurt and adds another forward to the mix, but his contract expires at the right time (after 2009-2010) for the Knicks to make a run at LeBron. And, the Knicks might not be done, as there are multiple reports that Zach Randolph could be headed out of town as well. Trading his two highest scorers on the same day would be a bold move for Donnie Walsh, but for Knicks’ fans who have waited years for a coherent plan to come out of MSG it is worth it. UPDATE: In addition to sending Crawford to Golden State, Zach Randolph and Mardy Collins are also heading to California. The two have been traded to the Clippers for shooting guard Cuttino Mobley and forward Tim Thomas, clearing even more salary for 2010. In other crazy Knicks news, they may have to dress Stephon Marbury tonight to have the 8 players required by league rules.

  • Knicks 120, Heat 115: For one night at least, the memories of the plodding, disorganized and selfish Knicks teams under Isiah Thomas were a distant memory. Mike D'Antoni's Knicks ran the Heat out of the building in the ex-Suns coach's first game as the New York head man. This game is going to be a good indicator of what can be expected of the Knicks this season. It had an up-tempo pace, little or no defense and a 40-point opponents' fourth quarter that made it a lot closer than it needed to be. But the D'Antoni Knicks are 1-0, so that's enough with the negatives. Jamal Crawford led the way with 29 points, and Zach Randolph, who could be a force now that Thomas is gone, had 20 points and nine rebounds.
  • Nets 95, Wizards 85: Vince Carter played like the captain he was named before the game, scoring 21 points and leading the Nets to a win over a Wizards team playing without Gilbert Arenas. The most encouraging sign in this was had to be Yi Jianlian's 17 points. Part of the haul gotten in exchange for Richard Jefferson, Yi was mostly a disappointment in his first season with Milwaukee last season. If he can impress like this, maybe the Nets won't be as bad as anyone expects.
  • Mapleleafs 6, Devils 5 (shootout): Even though Martin Brodeur stopped 48 shots on goal, the Devils fell to the Maple Leafs in an shootout. The Devils blew leads of 2-0 and 4-3 and had to rally to send the game into overtime. Finally, Niklas Hagman's shot in the fourth round of the shootout got past Brodeur. This is the Devils' third straight loss.

Nate Robinson had 17 points, Jamal Crawford had 23 and Zach Randolph added 19 points and 12 boards while the Knicks “improved” to 19-46.

  • Nets 104 Cleveland 99: LeBron had 42 points, 11 rebounds and 7 assists, but it wasn’t enough. The Cavaliers simply didn’t play defense, allowing the Nets to shoot 51% from the field and put six-different players into double figures.
  • Florida 4 Islanders 2: Blake Comeau scored a goal to tie things up at 2 in the third period, but Florida answered just over a minute later when Karlis Skrastins beat Rick DiPietro. Hope remains, but the Islanders are running out of chances to get into the playoffs.
  • Yankees-Rays have a brawl: Good for Joe Girardi for having his team make a statement when Heath Phillips hit Evan (don’t call me Eva) Longoria, too bad Shelly Duncan couldn’t have left it at that.
  • Marquette, Villanova, West Virginia and Pittsburgh all advance at the Big East Tourney
  • Mavericks 111 Nets 91: Jason Kidd got his first crack at his old team and he spent the night dishing the ball. Kidd finished with 13 assists, a lot of them to Dirk Nowitski, who scored 34, and Dallas cruised to an easy win.
  • Hornets 107, Nets 96: Chris Paul looks like a quicker and better-shooting version of Jason Kidd. The Hornets' young star put up 25 points and 16 assists as the Hornets won this one easily. Richard Jefferson led all scorers with 27, but Nenad Krstic's 14 points and 11 rebounds had to bring a smile to Lawrence Frank's face. Devin Harris, still getting adjusted, had 17 points and eight assists, but he was clearly the second-best point guard on the court.
  • Washington 4 Devils 0: The Capitals broke in their new goalie, Cristobal Huet and he responded with a shutout. The Devils kept it close through two periods, but Washington got a goal 43 seconds into the third and didn’t look back.
  • Knicks 113 Bobcats 89 Take a long look at this box score, because you probably won’t see another one like it this season. The Knicks won a laugher Wednesday 113-89, dominating Charlotte over the final three quarters of the game.

The only question after the win is what is going on with Eddy Curry? Curry played the first 9:29 of the game and then sat on the bench for the remainder of the game. Isiah gave up a ton to get the guy and now he won’t play him?

Nigel Dawes got the Rangers on the board near the end of the third period as he converted a power play chance. Scott Gomez who assisted on the first goal followed with a goal of his own, setup by a great screen from Chris Drury at 3:53 of the second. Then the fights started, a linesman took a skate to the face but the Rangers and Valiquette kept their focus and got the win.

This was a shorthanded and tired team. Renaldo Balkman missed the game for his elbow in Tuesday's game against L.A. Eddy Curry and Quentin Richardson have the flu. The rest of the team is just sick of losing.

  • East 8, West 7: Islanders goalie Rick DiPietro made 12 saves in 13 shots, and, for an All-Star Game, that qualifies him for the Hall of Fame. The one goal he did give up came when he was giving an interview, so it shouldn't even count. He represented the New York area well.

    • Knicks 89 Philadelphia 76ers 81: The Knicks enjoyed a team effort in defeating another struggling Eastern Conference team, the Sixers. Five players scored in the double digits, led by Jamal Crawford's 18 pounts and Zach Randolph's 16 points and 14 rebounds. Coach Isiah Thomas said, "We have good shot distribution, everyone feels part of the game, everyone gets to touch the basketball."

  • Clippers 120, Nets 107 (OT): That five-game winning streak seems like ages ago. Too bad the NBA doesn't give out half a win for reaching overtime. Offense wasn't the problem for the Nets. As Josh Boone -- he of 17 points, 16 rebounds and 3-of-4 free throw shooting -- said, the Clippers just played better defense in the bonus session.
  • Jamal Crawford led the way with 35 points and eight assists, including a huge three-pointer when the game was tied at 102. Zach Randolph had 24 points and 11 rebounds Vince Carter had 26 and Richard Jefferson 22 in the loss.

  • Canadiens 3, Islanders 1: Nassau Coliseum could feel worse than playing on the road. Among the dingiest of NHL's arenas, the Islanders' Uniondale home didn't provide a boost against the Habs. Richard Park had the lone goal for the Islanders, who performed better in their two games in Canada than they did at home.
  • Islanders 5, Flames 4 (SO): Mike Sillinger scored two goals in regulation and then added the winner in the shootout. That's after he failed in the Pacific Northwest against the Canucks on Wednesday.
  • Ming finished with 36 points as the Knicks once again showed their indifference to the defensive end of the floor. Both Curry and Randolph were in the starting lineup, which doesn’t help matters. The next five games are against Toronto, Detroit, Washington, New Jersey and Washington so 9-30 is a definite possibility.

    • Devils 2, Sabres 1 (SO): Aggressive play cost the Devils the win in regulation, but Martin Brodeur, Brian Gionta and Patrik Elias too center stage in the shootout to allow the Devils to continue their home dominance. They have picked up 21 of 22 points at their new Prudential Center in the last 11 games. Things didn't look so rosy when Jason Pominville tied the game with 1:47 to go, but the Devils bounced back. They held out during Buffalo's dominance of the extra session to make use of Brodeur in the shootout.
    • Lightning 5, Rangers 3: Spotting the Lightning a three-goal lead didn't seem to be a good move. After Jaromir Jagr opened the scoring, Tampa Bay struck for four straight, and the Rangers couldn't recover.
    • Canucks 3, Islanders 2 (SO): The Islanders can't be happy they traveled all the way to the Pacific Northwest only to see that second point disappear after a goal between the legs of Rick DiPietro. But he can't be blamed for this loss. His 43 saves were the only reason the Islanders made it to the extra session and the shootout.

    • Spurs 97, Knicks 93: The Spurs entered this game nearly perfect at home. What chance did the Knicks have? At least their draft lottery position keeps getting better. Eddy Curry appeared to be motivated. He had 25 points 12 rebounds. Too bad the Knicks let the Spurs shoot 50 percent from 3-point range. This game could have turned out differently.
    • Nets 102, Bobcats 96: Until Friday, the Nets hadn't won four straight games. That No. 4 came against the Bobcats is of little concern to the suddenly hot Nets. Vince Carter had 30 points and Richard Jefferson, who was reportedly sick, 28 points. Jason Kidd threw in a triple double for good measure, and the Big Three turned in a vintage performance. After his critical role in the win against the Magic on Wednesday, Darrell Armstrong added two big threes late.
    • Devils 3, Flyers 0: All hail the shutout king. Martin Brodeur stopped 36 shots for his 96th career regular-season shutout. He already holds the mark if playoffs are included, but Terry Sawchuk's mark of 103 is still within reach.

That’s where things stood well into the third period. The Rangers thought they had tied the game when Fedor Tutyin’s wrist shot was ruled a goal on the ice, but video replay overturned it. A few minutes later Chris Drury tied things up with a great effort. And, Drury figured in the overtime winner. After Montreal turned the puck over, Girardi made a brilliant pass to Drury who led Brendan Shanahan perfectly and Shanahan deposited the puck into the net for a very satisfying end to 2007.

The Lakers cruised to a 70-45 lead and then had to hang on against a Knicks’ rally that happened with the unit of Nate Robinson, David Lee, Malik Rose, Jared Jeffries and Jamal Crawford playing most of the minutes. What changes are coming? It’s hard to say, but a good start would be splitting Eddy Curry and Zach Randolph up. Let’s just hope Isiah doesn’t start making trades.

  • Sabres 2, Islanders 1: If only they had committed five penalties. A late third-period goal came as the Sabres' sixth power play expired, and the Islanders dropped one at home. This was the second bit of bad news for the Isles, who saw serial assaulter enforcer Chris Simon suspended for 30 games for stepping on an opponent's ankle.
  • Jamal Crawford led the way with 32 points and Zach Randolph added 20. Even Eddy Curry looked interested with 23 points and 9 rebounds, only his third game of the season with more than 8 rebounds. Add it all up and the Knicks got out of the cellar in the Eastern Conference.

Sonics 117, Knicks 110: Knicks fans deserve a lot of credit. No one's pointing out how hard it is to chant "Fire Isiah." That phrase has a ton of vowel sounds. They held off for part of this game, but at the end, the result was the same. Zach Randolph is the only self-respecting Knick, though Jamal Crawford has been putting up better numbers with Stephon Marbury still out. The sum of the parts is...

Mavericks 99, Knicks 89: Are James Dolan and Isiah Thomas watching the same team the fans are? More boos were heard in Madison Square Garden during the latest Knicks debacle. But James Dolan and Isiah Thomas don't seem to hear them -- or feel the "Fire Isiah" chants are justified. What more evidence do they need? A loss to the Mavericks, the team that finished with the best record in the NBA last season, wouldn't...

76ers 101, Knicks 90: Under most circumstances, losing to one of the worst teams in the NBA would be of concern to the Knicks. But with the death of guard Stephon Marbury's father, it doesn't seem so bad. Marbury played for the first half and scored two points but didn't come back out for the second half. Jamal Crawford had his second straight excellent game, but the Knicks frontcourt couldn't contain Samuel Delambert. The two...

Yesterday's Knicks practice was cancelled so that the entire team could attend the funeral for Don Marbury, father of Knicks captain Stephon Marbury. Don Marbury died during the Knicks' Sunday night game. Despite being a team often criticized for lacking chemistry, they all stood together at the Coney Island Gospel Assembly on Neptune Ave. to support their point guard during his difficult time. Malik Rose spoke on behalf of the team to the 600-plus...

Knicks 100, Nets 93: No Stephon Marbury, and the Knicks take down the Nets. Of course, the Nets didn't have Jason Kidd (headache), so who knows which team was worse off. Richard Jefferson's heroics couldn't get the job done for the Nets, who continue to play inexplicably poorly at home following road games. Jamal Crawford filled the backcourt "void" for the Knicks with 29 points, and Zach Randolph had 25. Richard Jefferson had 31 points...

  • Devils 4, Canadiens 0: Zach Parise made it look easy, scoring three goals at home as the Devils cruised. That's six straight wins for the Devils, and two shutouts for Martin Brodeur this season. The only bad news for the Devils? Jay Pandolfo's groin injury forced him to sit out -- for the first time in 307 games.
  • Knicks 113 Utah 109: Now we get it. The plan was to flash some early success and then create more headlines with manufactured drama and a big losing streak. Then, the Knicks would rise off the mat, run of a huge winning streak and make the playoffs. Unfortunately, it’s not quite that simple. Yes, the Knicks are now on a winning-streak with their victory Monday, but that is more a function of bad Utah defense...
