Queens Man Arrested for Fatally Stabbing Sister's Boyfriend

A longstanding family feud left one man dead after being stabbed yesterday afternoon in Jamaica. 42-year-old Michael Thompson was arrested for manslaughter after allegedly stabbing Adeyimi King in the chest while trying to protect his sister, King's girlfriend. A fourteen-year-old neighbor told the Daily News that the two had been at odds for some time including and incident where King "yanked (Thompson's) dreads from his head." The 40-year-old King died at Jamaica Hospital after the fight and stabbing around 1:30 p.m. left him lying in blood on Liverpool Street. A neighbor who refused to give her name to the News told the paper, "Life is so important, and people just don't value life anymore." more ›

A Queens bodega owner defended his store against a gun-wielding robber by way of a machete. Johan Marte, who owns the Erick Deli Grocery in Woodhaven, explained to the Post, "He had a gun and I took him out." The would-be robber, 28-year-old Omar Rodriguez, had fired twice before asking for money, but Marte managed to chop off the gunman's ear and finger. Louise Rojas' 13-month-old baby was on the floor and unresponsive and her husband Peter O'Keeffe, who was supposed to be baby-sitting, was nowhere to be found. While on the sidewalk, a car driven by 23-year-old Woodhaven resident Michael Barlow was suddenly on the sidewalk and hit her, throwing her 50 feet. Yesterday morning, a Windstar minivan crashed into a number of cars, including crushing a Dodge Neon whose three passengers were killed. The Windstar careened down Springfield Boulevard in Queens towards 144th Avenue, crashing into cars and came to a stop after flipping over. The minivan driver apparently suffered a seizure. Horse Injures Rider and Collides into Cab in Queens

Yesterday afternoon, 13 year old Javid Johnson's skull was fractured and leg broken when the horse he was riding suddenly freaked out and threw him into the street. The horse tried to jump over a taxi, but the cab's light "caught the horse and ripped him open," said 12 year old Marquise Jemmott, who was riding another horse. WCBS 2 reported that the horse "broke the windshield as it rolled onto the hood before landing on the ground." The cab's roof and windshield caved in, but the driver was not seriously injured. more ›

Last night, a man was crossing Queens Boulevard at 67th Avenue when a silver SUV hit him without stopping. The 59 year old man had been returning home from Yom Kippur services, and Queens DA Richard Brown said, "I'm troubled. I went to temple myself today. It's the most important day of the Jewish calendar, and apparently he was on his way home from temple after observing the holiday, and to have this happen to him is just a terrible tragedy." Heartbreaking Story of an Abused Infant

There are some things that Gothamist really hates reading about. Thursday afternoon in Queens, Kevin Gary Jr. was brought into Jamaica Hospital with some alarming injuries: a fractured skull and collar bone, swelling to his head and torso, and various bruises. Kevin's parents, Kevin Gary Sr. and Katrina Calloway , who originally planned to abandon him, are now awaiting arraignment on multiple charges including first-degree assault. There is also a history of abuse by the couple. Authorities said that they once bound the infant's wrists using a rubberband so he couldn't remove his pacifier. Kevin was then placed near a heater that caused burns severe burns. Even more shocking (if that's possible) is that Gary Sr. is 32 and Calloway is only 16! He was arrested on statutory rape charges shortly after Kevin's birth. more ›
