Filling the "It's so ridiculous," "It's true" and "You certainly didn't get what you paid for" categories is news that the combined salary for the New York Knickerbockers for the 2006-07 season was a whopping $139,381,526. While the astronomical payroll of the Knicks isn't new news, it's always fun to look at the payrolls of teams that didn't make the NBA Playoffs.

In his infinite wisdom, James Dolan has declared that Isiah Thomas must show “measurable” progress to keep his job after this season. What exactly that means hasn’t been defined, but the question is; how can this team not improve on last season? The Knicks managed only 23 wins last year and seemed to use a different lineup every night. Larry Brown ruined his reputation as a great coach by sniping at his players in the media and failing to set a rotation. In short, there is no possible scenario where this team plays worse than it did last year.

The 2005-06 Knicks’ season will go down as the worst in team history. For approximately $125 million New York finished with the second-worst record in the league and embarrassed themselves and the franchise almost nightly. The coach fought with the players, the players quit on the coach and the GM got accused of sexual harassment.

Larry Brown has vowed to use the remaining games of the season to audition players for next year. With Jalen Rose and Stephon Marbury injured, Brown put Qyntel Woods and Jamal Crawford into the starting lineup and brought Steve Francis off the bench. While the Knicks managed to shoot over 50% the defense wasn’t there again and they lost 114-95.

Instead of dwelling on another pathetic loss by the Knicks Gothamist is going layout what he would like to see happen the rest of the season which thankfully lasts only 14 more games.

Why fight with one point guard when you can fight with two? Larry Brown decided to start a brawl with Steve Francis by benching him for the final three quarters of the Knicks 111-87 loss to the Magic. Francis was playing his first game in Orlando since being traded to the Knicks in February.

When in crunch-time, most teams, most coaches, would turn to their star player, but not the dysfunctional Knickerbockers. As we all know, they are not most teams. They are a team with the highest payroll in the NBA and the team with the 2nd worse record in the NBA. Surely if the Bobcats played as many games as the Knicks have, our fine New York team would actually be the worst in the NBA. Last night, however, the Knicks provided The Garden crowd with a 121-117 double-overtime victory in what had to be one of their most exciting wins of the season. Not hard, considering they only have eighteen.

The Knicks didn’t just win last night they actually dominated a game. Jalen Rose played his best game as a Knick, scoring 21 and adding 8 assists in New York’s 107-92 victory. The win puts the Knicks 1 ½ games ahead of the Bobcats for the worst record in the NBA.

Maybe the Nets shouldn't be so quick to beg for consistency. As they took care of the Knicks 96-83 on Wednesday, the Nets witness the downside of such a characteristic: regularly poor play. New Jersey won for the 12th straight time at home; the Knicks have lost 13 of 14 and can't win without Stephon Marbury (0-7 without him). The Nets appear ticketed for the playoffs and homecourt through at least one round; the Knicks continue to improve the Bulls' draft pick (they get the Knicks' selection this June, whether it's in the lottery or not).

The Knicks keep finding new and more humiliating ways to lose. Tuesday night, it was an inbounds play that sunk them. Down by one with 2.2 seconds left in the game, Jalen Rose could not get the ball in play within five seconds and were whistled for a turnover that sealed their 85-82 loss.

You may have missed it in the Super Bowl hype, but the Knicks actually played an entire game without giving up yesterday. They hung in until the end and almost pulled off a miracle in their 93-89 loss to the Rockets.

However they try and spin it, this trade makes no sense. Rose is a terrible defender; not exactly the type of player Larry Brown is going to embrace. The draft pick belongs to the Nuggets, which means it won’t be in the lottery and probably will be in the bottom third of the draft. Lastly, by making this move, the Knicks are essentially giving up on Quentin Richardson, who they brought in at the cost of Kurt Thomas.

And just like that the winning streak is over. The Knicks didn’t just lose on Sunday they were humiliated. Atrocious defense, poor rebounding and lousy free throw shooting all played a part in Toronto’s 129-103 victory.

The Knicks may have even topped their two narrow losses to Chicago by allowing seven 3-pointers and 38 points during the final quarter in Toronto. Jalen Rose (who is Isiah Thomas' latest object of desire) led the charge with 24 for the Raps, who are essentially a starless team since trading Vince Carter to the Nets for a collection of role players. Jamal Crawford looked rusty in his second game back from a turf toe (!!) injury, and nobody else seemed able to pick up the slack on offense.
