The Cinecultist's Weekly Movie Pick: Competition Casualties Edition
Weekend Movie Guide
Gothamist loves movies (especially those by any "Anderson" director). That's why each Friday, we'll highlight the best and worst in both indie and blockbuster movies as well as the latest in trailers (because admit it, they're the best part of the movie-going experience). We will try our hardest to refrain from such overused phrases as "a non-stop laugh riot", "high octane fun" and "so funny I pished myself!" But no promises.
Our Defender, Hero and the One: Jet Li
Despite his place as the second highest paid Chinese movie stars, save for #1 Jackie Chan, Jet Li gets surprisingly little buzz here in the States. To coincide with the release of his 2002 hit in Asia finally making it to our screens, the American Museum of the Moving Image in Queens presents a series devoted to Li's movies, "Fist & Sword: A Tribute to Jet Li" running through next Thursday, Aug. 26.
Shanghai'd
There is really no movie out there right now that Gothamist can recommend more highly than simply renting or buying Shanghai Knights. Hysterically funny, it features some beautiful stunt set pieces by Jackie Chan and nonstop charm and sexiness from Owen Wilson. Salon's Charles Taylor and the Time's Elvis Mitchell loved it. And really, the two thumbs up from Ebert & Roeper means something! Roger Ebert's review.
Movies I'm seeing this weekend:
, which starred Gene Hackman, Willem Dafoe, and Frances McDormand. In David Gale, Kate Winslet is the journalist who tries to save him before "it's too late." Ahem.
