  • Angels 12, Yankees 6: Ivan Rodriguez got cheered on his way up to his first at-bat. Then he struck out, and surprisingly got booed on the way back. The real boos should have been for his handling of starter Andy Petttitte, who had trouble getting on the same page with his catcher all night. The lefty allowed two three-run homers in the third inning, and the rout was on. Xavier Nady did homer and the Yankees helped their run differential by scoring three in the ninth inning, but that doesn't matter in the long run. The Angels own the Yankees, and, now that everyone considers the team from Los Angeles of Anaheim the best one in baseball, New York has the misfortune of playing it nine more times.

  • Yankees 13, Orioles 3: The Joba Chamberlain starting experiment continues to go well, and Bobby Abreu continued his second-half surge. To boot, right after the game, the Yankees announced they had picked up Ivan Rodriguez from the Tigers in exchange for Kyle Farnsworth. That's an improvement over Jose Molina. The Orioles are the worst team in the American League East, but they have had the Yankees' number this year. Not Wednesday. Abreu homered twice. Rodriguez added a homer late. Chamberlain went six innings and allowed only one earned run, striking out six and, more importantly, walking none.
  • With one All-Star catcher facing season-ending shoulder surgery, the Yankees acquired another All-Star today when they made a huge upgrade at catcher by trading for Ivan Rodriguez from the Detroit Tigers. In return for the 36 year-old catcher, the Yankees sent relief pitcher Kyle Farnsworth to the Tigers. Long-time Yankees catcher Jorge Posada, who is in the first year of a 4 year, $52 million contract with the Yankees, underwent season-ending shoulder surgery today and will miss the rest of the season. Rodriguez, who is batting .295 this season with 5 HR and 32 RBI is a 14-time All-Star, 13-time Gold Glove winner, and former MVP (AL, 1999).

Andy Pettitte has always wanted the ball in his hand with the game on the line...until now. Faced with the prospect of having to publicly contradict his friend, Roger Clemens, Pettitte asked to be excused from tomorrow’s hearing in Congress. Representative Tom Davis told Newsday last night that the Pettitte deposition matched McNamee’s in “most details” but Roger Clemens’ deposition says Pettitte is mistaken. As a result, Pettitte has been excused, along with Chuck Knoblauch and Kurt Radomski setting up a one-on-one showdown between Roger Clemens and Brian McNamee.

Mussina gave up seven runs in six innings. In Mussina's last two starts, against the Mets and Tigers, he is 0-2 with a 9.82 ERA. In the two games against the Devil Rays, he is 0-2 with an ERA of 11.00. Not really the numbers of an ace, are they? Last night the tigers were able to run away with the game and win 9-1. Jason Johnson pitched 8 strong innings to move his record to 6-7, allowing one run on six hits.

On Mondayat 4AM, two gun wielding thugs, Silverio Rivera and Pedro Rivilla, tried to rob another passenger on the W train. As the train pulled into Union Square, the passenger, Otelio Tapea, an illegal Mexican immigrant, grabbed their gun and as the three wrestled for the gun, Rivera was shot. Tapea fled the scene and was later arrested. When police arrived to investigate at the station, Rivilla claimed he and Rivera had been attacked by a Mexican gang. Rivera is on life support, charges are pending against Tapea.
