Last week, the Social Security Administration revealed the top baby names of 2010 were Isabella and Jacob, but it turns out the most popular baby names in NY are Isabella and Michael (again). But let's look at the country's #34 girl's name, which happens to be... Brooklyn.
Brooklyn Is A Popular Girl's Name Almost Everywhere (Except NY)
Isabella, Jacob Are Most Popular Baby Names (AGAIN)
The Social Security Administration released its annual tally of the most popular baby names and Isabella and Jacobs are tops yet again. The hottest boys' names are Grayson, Kellan, Mason, Easton, and Bentley and the hottest girls' names are Giuliana, Kinley, Khloe, Quinn and Maci—these hot names are fueled by pop culture figures, from Teen Moms to actors, from E! news hosts to E! reality show stars. (Explanation: "Incredibly, this name has made the hottest-rising list three years running on the reality-tv coattails of Khloe Kardashian. Four years ago Khloe was just a fringe "kreative" spelling of the hit traditional name Chloe. Now it's a top-50 hit.")
New York's Top Baby Names Not As "Twilight" Inspired
The Social Security Administration released the top baby names of 2009 by state, and though Isabella still topped the list in New York, Cullen was thankfully nowhere to be found. All-American Michael was the most popular boy's name, kicking last year's favorite Jayden into second place, and last year's Top 5 placer Sarah dropped to 10th place. So what else are people naming their kids these days?
"Twilight" Inspires Top Baby Names
Because every parent wants their child to be named after an obsessive teenage girl, a buff werewolf of an overbearing, sparkly vampire, baby names inspired by the "Twilight" book series are continuing to rise in popularity, according to the Social Security Administration. Though "Isabella" and "Jacob" have been on the most popular since 2004, they became the 1st choices last year, beating out "Emma" and "Ethan." So apparently Edith Wharton and Jane Austen aren't best sellers amongst moms-to-be?
Sophia & Jayden Oust Isabella & Daniel as Top NYC Baby Names
Sophia and Jayden surpassed Isabella and Daniel to become the most popular baby names in NYC, according to the Health Department's annual report [pdf] on infant nomenclature. 872 newborn males were named Jayden (the most popular name for black and Hispanic boys) and 511 newborn females were named Sophia (the most popular name among Asians). Madison became a new favorite for girls born to black families, while Ashley was the most popular girl’s name for Hispanic families. For white babies, Daniel is #1 for boys, and Olivia for girls. And as usual, there were some novelties in the mix.
