Today is Memorial Day, the federal holiday where U.S. men and women who have died in military service are remembered. Federal and state offices are closed, as well as post offices, schools, financial markets, and banks. The subways and buses are running on a Sunday schedule; Metro-North is on a Sunday schedule while the LIRR is on a holiday schedule; and the PATH is on weekend schedule.

If at first you don't succeed... dig a big trench and wait for the next high tide. Bill White, president of the Intrepid Sea, Air and Space Museum announced yesterday that the Intrepid aircraft carrier is scheduled to be moved to Bayonne next Tuesday. The first attempt to move the ship on November 6th ended after only a few feet of movement as the 36,000 ton carrier's propellers got stuck in the mud.

Last Monday, after months of planning, tugboats attempted to move the USS Intrepid from Pier 86 on Manhattan's West Side to Bayonne, NJ for repairs. Unfortunately, the aircraft carrier's propellers were partially stuck in the mud and couldn't be budged. But now the Navy is coming to the rescue, agreeing to send a salvage team to dredge Intrepid and have it moved within three weeks. Apparently there were appeals from many levels of New York government!

8pm Fireworks Show

Today's Times brings up an intersesting question: What happens when a floating military museum needs to get touched up and repaired?

Let's step away from some of the more popular sports for a second. Move aside basketball and your NCAA Tournament. Take a chill pill baseball with your World Baseball Classic and Spring Training. Yesterday the Intrepid Sea-Air-Space Museum hosted the Big Apple Grapple, which featuring the some of the world's best male and female arm wrestlers. All battling for NYC's King and Queen of Arms. Unfortunately, there are no results online for this scintillating display of strength.

There's a nice multimedia slideshow from the Times about the QM 2. NYC.gov has information on Queen Mary 2 festivities and viewing areas; they emphasize not to go near QM2 while it's in dock at Pier 92 due to security reasons. The big event will be on Sunday, when "both QM2 and QE2 will depart from the cruise terminal, at 7:30 p.m. and 7:45 p.m. respectively, sail down the Hudson River and slowly pass the Statue of Liberty at 8:30 p.m. with a fireworks display by Grucci."

A Concorde has finally landed at the Intrepid Sea-Air-Space Museum on the Hudson River. With the retirement of the supersonic jets, Concorde decided to donate one to the Intrepid and that jet was moved to the museum today. All the morning news shows cut to the sight of the plane traveling via barge along the water. The Times article has a link to aviation reporter Edward Wong's multimedia essay about the Concorde's Last Flight.
