The hubbub over White House environmental official Van Jones continues to simmer, with Glenn Beck and other conservatives demanding that Jones, a green jobs innovator, step down. Jones' past, notably signing a petition claiming that 9/11 was an inside job (though two people who signed the petition, including Howard Zinn, say they were misled into signing it) and calling Republican assholes in a video, has required him to deny support for "9/11 truther" views and apologize for other past statements. When asked about the 9/11 truther petition, White House press secretary Robert Gibbs said, "It's not something that the president agrees with." Well, that's a relief! Still, Rep. Mike Pence (R-Indiana) wants Jones to resign, "Given recent revelations concerning the associations and statements of the president's green jobs czar, Van Jones should resign his position and if he is unwilling to do so, the president should demand his resignation. His extremist views and coarse rhetoric have no place in this Administration or the public debate," and complains that people in "czar" positions aren't vetted by Congress. more ›

Robbers have decided to bypass the poor boxes and instead steal from Catholic schools in Brooklyn and Queens. The Post reports that thieves stole a heavy safe from the Holy Family School in Flushing, Queens. It's suspected that it's an inside job, since the thieves "were able to find the safe on the second floor in a locked closet" and "also seemed to know it recently had been filled with tuition money, which was to be deposited the following day." Plus they were able to remove the safe, which had $19,000 in cash and checks, without waking the sleeping nuns! Sister Dorothy Delaney said, "I hate to say it, but someone must have known where it was." Other Catholic schools have reported robberies; the Post say the police aren't saying whether it's a pattern. The police have released a sketch of the suspect who attacked and robbed a man of $149,000 in cash on West 56th Street on Friday. The incident, which occurred around 2PM, scared Midtown pedestrians as a shot was fired. But in spite of the number of witnesses, the suspect got away. more ›
