Tyree Wright, 19, has been arrested for the death of two-year-old Jacquil Degraffenreid—Wright is accused of repeatedly hitting him in the torso while the boy's mother was at work. Now, Nyemah Nickens claims Wright also is responsible for the death of her 7-month-old child—a crime for which Nickens has spent 18 months at Rikers Island. more ›

Last week, the Brooklyn district attorney confirmed that prosecutors are investigating the circumstances surrounding the death of a two-week old infant who died last fall in Brooklyn after he contracted herpes from a religious circumcision at Maimonides Medical Center. As we noted, the case sounded eerily similar to that of Rabbi Yitzchok Fischer, a Rockland County mohel who was found to have given three babies herpes through the ritual several years ago. Prosecutors have noticed that as well, and just announced they were investigating Fischer in connection to the baby's death—and it turns out that Fischer has continued performing the controversial religious circumcisions despite a court order to stop. more ›

Yesterday, a 6-month-old baby died after being struck by a falling branch near the sea lion exhibit at the Central Park Zoo. Baby Gianna Riccuitti died almost instantly while her mother Karla DelGallo, who was also struck and hospitalized, is now in stable condition. The city's Administration for Child Services is looking into the death of an 11-month-old boy who passed away in Cypress Hills on Monday night. Police responded to a call of an infant having difficulty breathing at around 8:30 pm, but when they arrived, the baby was already being moved to Brookdale Hospital, where he was pronounced dead. The child — whose name was Major Gonzalez, according to NY1 — had a bruise on his forehead. The station reports that the parents are being questioned, and further testing is required before investigators will be able to determine a cause of death.
