NY Post: "41 Charged in Mortgage Fraud!"

The Post really had us going here for a second, because this headline could be misunderestimated to mean that George H. W. Bush, our 41st president, was being indicted for mortgage fraud. For an all-too-brief moment, we thought, well, it's not Dubya, but it's a start! Unfortunately, the 41st president remains untouchable, and the 41 in question here is a crowd of attorneys, loan brokers, accountants charged with mortgage fraud involving tens of millions of dollars across New York state. Screw them, too, but don't tease us Post.

NYPD Officer Alex Kelly has been indicted on vehicular manslaughter and DWI charges in connection with the late September accident that killed pedestrian Vionique Valnord as she tried to hail a cab. Of course, Kellly managed to postpone taking a blood alcohol test for over seven hours, so he scored a perfect zero on the test, which is going to make it hard for prosecutors to make the DWI rap stick.

Cops Indicted On Charges of Raping Inebriated Woman

A grand jury has indicted two NYPD officers in the alleged rape of an intoxicated woman they had escorted to her East Village apartment. Sources tell City Room that a grand jury voted last week to indict officers Kenneth Moreno and Franklin Mata, but the exact nature of the charges is still unclear. A lawyer for officer Moreno, a 17-year veteran on the force, says, "My client will appear in court tomorrow and enter a plea of not guilty. We look forward to a rigorous examination of the district attorney’s evidence."

Cops Indicted, Video Vindicates Accused Brothers

Two undercover cops are being formally indicted today on charges that they framed two brothers and their friends in a drug bust at Club Delicioso in Elmhurst. Last January Officer Henry Tavarez and Detective Stephen Anderson were part of a team performing a “buy-and-bust” operation at the nightclub, resulting in six arrests. But prosecutors say Tavarez did not actually buy any blow, and instead used some of the cocaine bought by Anderson as evidence against four men who had simply been hanging out outside the club. Luckily for them, the defendants were able to obtain a copy of the surveillance video proving they never had any contact with the officers, and the charges against them were ultimately dropped. Both officers are now accused of conspiracy, official misconduct, and according to the Queens D.A., "knowingly engaging in criminal activity that could have resulted in lengthy prison terms for four innocent men."

Three Indicted in Staten Island Election Night Beatings

While millions across New York City were celebrating Barack Obama's election victory on November 4th, a group of young Staten Island men went on a violent rampage that left two young black men beaten and another man in a coma, prosecutors say. Three of the alleged attackers were arraigned in Federal District Court in Brooklyn today and charged with conspiracy to interfere with voting rights in their efforts to "injure, oppress, threaten and intimidate" black people on election night, the Times reports. Each plead not guilty.

One of the climbers who scaled the NY Times building earlier this year is making headlines again. Although both Renaldo Clarke and Alain Robert climbed the same building unannounced on June 5th, their stunts are being treated differently, The NY Times reports. Robert is being viewed as a professional stuntman, while Clarke is not-- despite his attempts to convince the court otherwise (he says he previously climbed the Hearst building unnoticed). Clarke appeared in State Supreme Court in Manhattan yesterday and (just like the third climber) was indicted on criminal charges, something Robert avoided with his charges being dropped. He could now face up to a year in prison, something his lawyer says is "a little disappointing. I guess they bought the first guy’s claim that he’s Mr. Experienced Climber.” Mr. Unexperienced Climber will now be seeking a plea deal.

Marina Gavrielova's husband makes about $98,000 a year as a limo driver and owns a nice house in Jamaica, Queens, where the couple resides with their three children. But according to prosecutors, Gavrielova duped various city, state and federal agencies into believing she was single mom living in Brooklyn, earning just $200 a week at a nail salon. With her husband posing as her landlord, Gavrielova, a licensed cosmetologist, allegedly bilked the system out of $360,000 in welfare benefits, which helped fund trips to Cancun, the Bahamas and Jamaica.

The owner of Munchies Bodega in Brownsville Brooklyn, Salah Ahmad, was indicted by a grand jury on assault and other charges for bludgeoning teenager Bunkless Bovian with a hammer. Bovian was placed in a medically induced coma following the incident last month, but has since been released from Brookdale University Hospital.

Two white Staten Island cops were indicted today for an incident last Halloween in which they allegedly handcuffed a black egg-throwing teen and drove him to a dark, secluded marshland he was stranded (the handcuffs were taken off). Initially, the cops were also accused of stripping him down to his shorts and kicking him.
