Paterson's Taxes Reveal He Shed Lots of Old Rags Last Year

Governor Paterson has discovered the gift of charity in his first year as the state's head honcho. Yesterday Paterson's tax returns were made public, showing that he and his wife Michelle got a $4,300 refund for the over $61,000 in federal taxes they had paid and owed another $182 on top of the $27,000 plus in state and local taxes paid out. Some of that federal refund can be attributed to the $11,000 the Patersons donated this past year. Soon after taking over for Eliot Spitzer last year, it was revealed that the only donation that came out of the nearly $270,000 in income the couple earned in 2007 was a $150 worth of clothes they gave to The Salvation Army. This year The Sal made out like bandits with the Patersons donating over $1,400 in used clothing. Other beneficiaries of the couple's charity included the National Federation of the Blind; City Meals; 100 Black Men; Hadassah; the American Foundation of the Blind; League of the Hard of Hearing; Hispanic Federation; and WNYC Hear It Now.

2008_10_obyrne.jpgSome more fallout after revelations that an aide to Governor Paterson owed hundreds of thousands in back taxes. The Post reports that Charles O'Byrne "may have violated state ethics law by failing to list his massive tax debt on his financial disclosure statements." O'Byrne, who blames his non-filing of incomes taxes between 2001 and 2005 on clinicial depression, has paid off $200,000 of back taxes, but there's still almost $11,500 outstanding; O'Byrne's recent financial disclosure statement did not include any of the warrants. Additionally, the NY Times notes that while Paterson said he was aware of O'Byrne's tax problems, "a key unanswered question is whether Mr. Paterson knew that the aide failed to file and pay taxes even after assuring him that he would resolve the problem."

While the House of Representatives voted against a measure to strip Representative Charles Rangel of chairing the House Ways and Means Committee, House leaders are planning an investigation of Rangel's ethical issues--you know, the lack of reporting income on his returns, his rent-stabilized apartments, using House letterhead to solicit donations for a center being built in his name. This comes as his 1972 Mercedes Benz, long unused, was towed from a House parking garage!

Now that Representative Charles Rangel has gotten himself into a income tax fix, the tabloids are keeping a closer eye on his goings on. Both the Post and Daily News report that he's stopped proceedings to divorce his wife of 42 years Alma.

It's the day after Representative Charles Rangel's press conference discussing his tax issues related to not reporting 20 years of rental income (totaling around $75,000) to the IRS, and the big headline is that no one seems to quite buy one of his excuses. From the NY Times:

At a Capitol Hill news conference, during which he was by turns remorseful and combative, the congressman said that he had not been aware of the income and unpaid taxes in part because he had trouble getting detailed financial statements from the resort’s managers in the Dominican Republic.
