Fare Hike Hearings Continue As Critics Say City Should Help MTA More

Fare Hike Hearings Continue As Critics Say City Should Help MTA More

Tonight, the MTA will hold public hearings in Long Island and Queens about the proposed fare and toll hikes. And if Monday night's hearing in Brooklyn is any indication, things will probably be rollicking. Brooklyn Borough President Marty Markowitz earned applause when he said, "Ladies and gentleman, fuhgeddaboutit!" (the Post reported the agency reaction: "MTA board members sat stone-faced") while the Straphangers Campaign's Gene Russianoff brought a life-size cut-out of Governor Spitzer. Markowitz and Russianoff... more ›

NYPD Eradicates Aqua Teen Hunger Force

First things first: According to WNBC, the NYPD says that NYC marketing firm Interference Inc. gave them a list of 41 locations where the Aqua Teen Hunger Force LED devices were hung (38 in Manhattan, including the Meatpacking District, Greenwich Village, LES, and 3 in Brooklyn). The NYPD only found two which were at 33rd Street and the West Side Highway, which can only mean that everyone who passed by these things and heard the news last night must have taken them! And does anyone know what the other locations were? Gothamist is curious to know where Interference thinks ATHF fans are. Let us know in the comments! more ›

Why Pay for Water When Others Don't

Why Pay for Water When Others Don't

While the city is working on plans to keep the Big Apple sustainable through 2030, reading the NY Times article about how the city "fails to collect millions in unpaid water bills" is a funny counterpoint. It's like a trip down the rabbit hole, with various tales of insanity. For instance, there's the Niger's U.N. mission, which hasn't paid $120,000 in bills since 1998! The city still asks companies that have been bankrupt for 30 years to pay their bills. Then there's Joseph Mannino in Staten Island who has been charged over $250,000 in under 10 years for a small building (officials suggest Mannino might have a leaking toilet somewhere). What's interesting, though, is that the city hasn't turned off the water ever.

Since 1999, the city has had the legal right to suspend water service to residential accounts that were delinquent for more than two years. But it alone among big cities has never turned off the taps to a residence, though its rates are among the lowest of major cities. more ›

Sox Take Two

Sox Take Two

Not everything went so smoothly though. As is becoming the norm in this series, tempers rose during the game, resulting in ejections and bench clearing. First came Kenny Lofton and Doug Mientkiewicz in the third inning. The two had some issues as Lofton grounded out and Mientkiewicz supposedly didn't get out of Lofton's way quickly enough. Then, in the 8th, Pedro Astacio threw the ball behind Lofton, which got him ejected. In retaliation, Brad Halsey threw a ball high and tight to Dave Roberts, which got him and Joe Torre ejected. The benches cleared and words were exchanged, but there were no fisticuffs. more ›
