Why wasn't this monkey in the care of a zoo or someone who was qualified to care for monkeys? The Feds are nothing but a bunch of incompetent buffoons...

A new report from Con Ed reveals that "a tiny clump of leak-sealing epoxy" caused the blast in a Midtown steam pipe earlier this year. The pipe, at Lexington and 41st Street, ruptured on July 18, causing millions in damage; one person died of a heart attack while two people in a tow truck above the pipe and subjected to 400-degree steam were critically burned. Con Ed, as well as the city, is facing......

Brooklyn Councilman Simcha Felder is frustrated with Albany's politics and politicians for derailing his relatively simple bid to rid New York City of fliers and takeout menus. Back in April, Felder introduced a bill to the City Council that would have imposed fines on restaurants and businesses that dropped unsolicited materials on people's property. He was spurred to action after his mother was fined several times for having litter on her property––takeout menus that someone......

On Monday afternoon, a 51-year-old woman was stabbed multiple times on the head and shoulder with an 8-inch kitchen knife at the 169th Street F train platform in Jamaica, Queens. Paula Jean Baptiste's attacker, Matthew Cordacho, was trying to steal her purse but fled the scene after Baptiste put up a fight. However, he was followed by a witness who called 911 and ended up being arrested a few blocks away. Baptiste spoke to reporters......

In August Judith Supine added some flare to the Manhattan Bridge by hanging a 50-foot piece of art off of it. As a follow-up he brings another work to go "bathing" in the East River with him... That's probably less safe than swimming with the sharks.......

Police brutality claims occur in even tranquil beach towns. The Suffolk County DA's office has charged four members of Fire Island's Ocean Beach police, including the acting chief of police, for the 2005 beating of a Manhattan resident. Last week, other former police officers had filed a lawsuit, as the NY Times reports, claiming the acting chief "surrounded himself with a clique of officers who they claimed covered up instances of police brutality against vacationers......

We received a press release about the closing of yet another establishment in lower Manhattan today. This time it's not a high profile venue like CBGB, but a little vegan bakery on St Marks that is being forced out due to high rent. The League of Humane Voters of New York City (LOHV-NYC) and Rev. Billy are teaming up to save Whole Earth Bakery and Kitchen along with Council Member Rosie Mendez and Assemblyman Brian......

Shock waves in West Chelsea: The Observer reports Amy Sacco wants to sell Bungalow 8, the club that made the area attractive as a late night hang out. Citing the increased police presence in the area after the death of Jennifer Moore, the 18 year old NJ resident whose drunken night at Guest House on West 27th Street preceded being kidnapped from the West Side Highway and then raped and murdered in NJ, Sacco......

No it wasn't your imagination, that was a parade of police horses you saw parading down lower Manhattan yesterday. The horses, which hail from more than 12 states, are in town for the police equestrian competition in New Jersey this weekend. Since they were around anyway, the crime fighters and their riders took the opportunity to check out the NYPD's Mounted Unit headquarters near the Chelsea Piers before it moves and then went to......

Unfortunately Mike Cameron knows San Diego well. In August, he had that horrifying crash in the outfield with Carlos Beltran. Yesterday, Cameron was traded to the Padres for Xavier Nady, a right-fielder and first baseman. Assuming both players pass their physical, the Mets stand to save $5 million next year, something that already has local baseball writers speaking about Manny Ramirez. The trade would end a brief stint with the Mets for Cameron, who joined......

Just when you thought Thanksgiving was enough to satiate your inner glutton, Bloomie goes and declares a new holiday in which we can only imagine copious amounts of sinful behaviour will be celebrated. Nothing as bad as killing Indians though. December 5th has been proclaimed Guided By Voices Day by Mayor Mikey B. Which is funny because (and we're following the line of thinking that listening to Bobby Darin isn't a good thing) last year......

With 31 days left until the Olympic Games in Athens starts on , a blackout hit all of Athens yesterday. The blackout was worst one in more than 10 years and naturally stirred some more doubts in the logistical nightmare that has become the Athens Olympics. The outage was blamed on "mismanagement" of the electricity grid. I'm sure that's what athletes and security personnel want to hear - mismanagement. Naturally, the Olympic Organizing Committee assured......

Summer usually brings some pretty awesome storms. While they are sometimes fun to be in, no doubt cool to watch, and provide some invigorating excitement to a downright abusively hot and humid day... they can also be very dangerous. In August, 2002 a 25-year old on a roof in Chinatown was struck and killed by a lightning strike, not from a high rise, but a 6 story building. There was much speculation that the absence......
