New York University has decided to relocate its proposed 38-story tower from the controversial location in the middle of the landmarked Silver Towers complex and will instead attempt to build the tower in the Morton Williams supermarket space on Laguardia Place. NYU's New Tower Proposal Seems "Greedy" To Neighbors
Ahead of NYU's presentation to Greenwich Village neighbors tonight, the Wall Street Journal got a hold of renderings of the 38-story tower that the school wants to build on Bleecker Street. The building, which would include housing for faculty and a hotel for visiting faculty, is part of NYU's ambitious expansion plan, NYU 2031, to increase its physical size by 40%. But critics say it'll interfere with I.M. Pei's landmarked Silver Towers.

GVSHP adamantly opposed the plan, saying it violated the entire notion of landmarking the complex, and urged the LPC to protect the open space as part of its designation.

Later today, the city will discuss whether the I.M. Pei-designed Silver Towers should be landmarked. The Observer reported that NYU announced its support today, a reversal from an earlier position over three years ago.
