We've seen a few attempts of combining the 8-bit aesthetic with New York City, but this is by far the best. Illustrator Jamie Sneddon and photographer Kevin Rozario-Johnson joined forces and created a realistic Manhattan setting for Pac-Man (and of course the ghosts forever-chasing him). Can you tell what cross streets they're on? [via Laughing Squid]
8-Bit Fun: Pac Manhattan!
Duane Reade's Chinatown Delight
Duane Reade has been making over their image for a while now, and here's a new-ish product they're offering up called Chinatown Delight. The tagline: "More authentic than the watches on Canal Street." At least they didn't go with the whole "happy ending" thing?
New Pictograms Nixed for City Subway
Graphic designers hoping to score a gig making MTA pictograms are out of luck. Because of the administration's extreme budget crunch it's decided to recycle old instructional images rather than creating new ones. Among the pictograms planned as part of a citywide overhaul were icons telling commuters to keep their feet off the seats and graphic instructions to silence their cell phone chats, reports the Post. But with a $750 million deficit on its hands, the MTA will instead spend a considerably smaller sum refreshing the classics.
L.I. Democrat To Switch Parties, Run For Governor
A Long Island Democrat is planning to become a Republican so he has a better shot at becoming Governor. In a move that could turn out shaking up an election many thought was already decided—even though the predicted winner still hasn't officially declared his candidacy—Suffolk County Executive Steve Levy will leave the Democratic Party and become a Republican in pursuit of higher office.
NYT Distorts Image Of Christina Hendricks, Calls Her "Big"
By yesterday evening the Paper of Record published not one, but two takedowns of women — somewhat unsurprisingly, both centered around weight and penned by the fairer sex. The stage for the scrutiny was the Golden Globes red carpet, which many an actress strolled down on Sunday night.
Graphic Anti-Smoking Signs Will Be Required By Law
On their way to outlawing smoking in public parks, beaches, and in your dreams, officials at the Health Department are moving forward with a plan to require graphic cigarette warning signs anywhere you buy smokes in NYC. The new signs will include information on how to quit, and, like the one seen here, will show the ugly side-effects of smoking. Some 12,000 retailers in all five boroughs are expected to display the signs by December, but the city will give them a two month grace period before issuing fines.
Brazilian Business Paper's Nuanced Grasp of Economics Highlighted in Ad Campaign
The image below isn’t a rejected Rage Against the Machine album cover, but rather an ad campaign for a leading Brazilian business newspaper, Gazeta Mercantil. Designed by illustrator Pedro Izique for the São Paulo office of ad agency JWT, the print ad redesigns the Dollar, Euro and Yen with images of “some of the most important events of the last century.”
Chevolution, Tribeca Film Festival
Using a Leica M2 with a 90mm lens, Cuban photographer Alberto “Korda” Díaz snapped the iconic photograph of Ernesto “Che” Guevara during a mass funeral for the victims of a mysterious series of explosions in Havana harbor that killed at least 75 people 1960. The service was held the day after the tragedy, and Korda, who was Castro’s official photographer at the time, managed two photos of Guevara as he briefly stepped onstage to look out at the mourners. Korda later said that Che’s countenance was one of “absolute implacability, anger, and pain.”
