Upper West Siders had a new store to flock to this weekend: Grom, a gelato shop that opened on Broadway between 76th and 77th Streets. There were lines, and our own Joe Schumacher braved the UWS foodies and sweet-toothed for a taste.

I ordered a small luna rosso, which was the flavor of the month. It was quite good --dense and creamy. It was also expensive --$4.75 plus tax for that a small cup. That cup, by the way, is made of biodegradable paper, unlike the plastic cups used by Il Laboratorio del Gelato on the Lower East Side.
However, Joe warns that the $4.75 might prohibit people from being regulars.

Gothamist had the chance to get a sneak peek at the new Whole Foods on the Bowery. Although it's scheduled to open to the public tomorrow there was a pre-opening party last night. Yes - that's right, folks: A party to celebrate the opening of a grocery store which already has a few NYC locations.

Holy crap it's warm out there! Today is, by far, New York's warmest January 6th since records began. The only question now is whether we will reach 73 degrees to become the city's warmest January day ever. With winds out of the southwest and slightly drier air arriving over the last couple of hours we may do it.

In case you've been caught up in your holiday shopping, we wanted to let you know about some recent restaurant openings:

Savoy is bringing the beach to the city with their three course Summer Clam Bake. Enjoy littleneck clams on the half shell, a traditional boil with lobster, mussels, kielbasa, potatoes, and corn, and finish off with dessert, a peach and blueberry crumble topped with house made buttermilk ice cream. $40 per person, or an extra $15 will give you a bottomless glass of rose. Every evening during the month of July; 70 Prince Street, at Crosby, 212-219-8570.

* Sunday barbecue (which, unfortunately, wraps up on Halloween), Lillie's, 46 Beard St. at Dwight Street, Red Hook

Gothamist thinks Capogiro gelato may just be some of the freshest, creative and tastiest gelato available for purchase in a supermarket. Gelato aficionados debate the merits of Capogiro with the likes of city favorite Il Laboratorio del Gelato. Capogiro features seasonal, local hand picked ingredients in creative combinations that have previously stopped Gothamist in our tracks. A recent combination that blew us away was rosemary and honey infused goat milk gelato. Very light and pure tasting, with a hint of rosemary and a natural honey flavor that was shocking. Rosemary and honey - who knew? The only issue is that a pint sells for $10 at Whole Foods. Three nights of insane gelato to enjoy in the comfort of your home? We think it was worth every penny.

As some of you have pointed out, one of our favorite summer spots, NYC Icy, is no more. Like you, we had the same reaction -- severe depression. Where are we supposed to go now to get our cool summer treats on, especially on a day like today?!? We've come up with a few suggestions on our own, and the Daily News added a bunch to our list.

- $7.70 for a Deluxe Sundae Dinner Cake. There are also other promotions that run through the summer. If anyone gets pictures of the Union Square event, let Gothamist know; Jake refuses to go on the grounds that he doesn't have enough Lactaid. [Via Shannan - thanks]

Gothamist has always liked its pickles long and hard and juicy and a little sour, so when we heard they were having the Third Annual Lower East Side Pickle Festival on Orchard between Broome and Grand, we were down there faster than...well, you name it: Winona Ryder on a new up-and-coming musician, Tom Sanford on anything Tupac related, five gay men on a poorly dressed straight schlub. Unfortunately, despite our enthusiasm, we arrived at 4pm - the tail end of the event. Some of the stands had closed up, and we missed out on at least two varieties of pickles that we had never heard of before. Still, there was plenty left. Avoiding the long lines outside Guss's, we ate a serving of spicy kimchi, and took free samples from the chinese pickle lady and a few of the organic farmers. By the time we spun back around to the Gus's line, we were unusually full of piss and vinegar. Mostly vinegar. As always, Gus's came through as the winner, with excellent spicy full sour pickles, and a lovely pickled tomato and hot pepper combo that seemed new. Afterwards, we headed down to Il Laboratorio Del Gelato to ice out the acid. Recommended antitode to pickle overdose: Coconut and peach sorbet combo.
